"If it wasn't for the VEOs, I wouldn't be alive right now"
This quote was from the several feedbacks I saw today during my meeting with a number of the 14 Victim Engagement Officers (VEOs) we now have in Bedfordshire Police. As part of the 2023/24 budget, I allocated funding for the Chief Constable to recruit seven additional VEOs, doubling their number.
The totality of policing, which is one of my responsibilities as Police and Crime Commissioner, is much more than the number of police officers and amount of visible community police we have. A vast number (if not majority) of crimes take place away from sight of general public, they are happening in homes, online and in spaces where an officer on foot patrol cannot detect. This is a massively growing area of policing we must come to terms with, and I saw examples of this today.
VEOs work with victims of serious, often sexual offences throughout their journey in the criminal justice system. From when an arrest is made (if necessary) to when a court sentence is issued, they work with the victim, providing incredible support, sometimes literally life saving support.
In 2023 this expanded team of VEOs completed in excess of 2300 taskings. 200 per month on average. Did you know that now in Bedfordshire, Clare's Law disclosure requests has seen a 70% increase between 2022-23 (175 disclosures). 100% of all disclosures requests are now ready within 28 days, the legal requirement. When I first got elected, I asked the then Chief Constable about force performance on Clare's Law. The figure was extremely poor. Nearly three years later and thanks to the investment decisions and operational focus, we are in a much better place. In fact, urgent disclosures can now be ready in 24hrs.
There are MANY MANY unsung heroes in policing whom the public will never see. No one ever asks me about them or queries how many of them we have. They don't wear a police uniform, the don't drive a marked police car, and they are not police officers either, but they are ABSOLUTELY essential to making Bedfordshire a safer place for our children, families and communities.
