IN HONOUR OF WOKE Here's something Simon Blackler said the other today: "It's time people woke up." The reason it matters is many-fold, but here's why I like the way Simon runs his company Krystal: 1. They're British and Private. That means they pay their taxes here in the UK for the good of the British people. 2. They're not run by a non-dom, foreign corporation, offshore entity, or any of the other so-called "legal" companies using a multitude of accountancy dodges to zero their tax bills while fleecing the British public. 3. They grow trees. I moved all my sites to them in 2017 and each month the trees they plant in return for my custom grows. I now have a mini-forest. The planet benefits and I get satisfaction from being woke. You see, woke is good. Woke means we take notice and care about things. Woke comes from the Old English verb to wake (wōc). So when Simon Blackler said "It's time people woke up", well, he was right. PS. I have no connection with Simon Blackler or Krystal other than being a customer. I am not an affiliate and have never been compensated for recommending Krystal (which I do frequently). The best businesses on the planet work by caring about their customers, their country, and their planet. Long live woke. Long live businesses like Krystal.

I'm thrilled to share my latest article, "Navigating the Complex Landscape of Tax Investigations: A Closer Look at HMRC’s Strategy," published by EyeOnLondon on 10 February. This piece takes a closer look at the shifting sands of tax compliance and investigation strategies employed by HMRC. The article unfolds the complexity beneath high-profile tax evasion cases, like that of Bernie Ecclestone, to reveal a nuanced approach by HMRC that balances the scales between punitive measures and cooperative frameworks. Drawing insights from industry experts, including my colleague and DSC Metropolitan LLP tax investigations partner Andrew McKenna, I explore how HMRC's strategic shifts are affecting the landscape of tax compliance and the implications for both taxpayers and tax professionals. With a focus on the principle that "honey traps more than vinegar," the article argues for a balanced approach to tax enforcement, highlighting the potential of incentive-based compliance measures over strict punitive actions. It also touches upon the significant challenges HMRC faces, from cost-cutting measures to the need for a nuanced understanding of tax law's impact on both the economy and individual taxpayers. Join me in exploring the intricacies of HMRC's strategy and the future of tax investigations. Your thoughts and feedback are not only welcome, but highly appreciated. See link in comments.
