Addressing physician demoralization: A focus on relationships Demoralization among physicians stems not only from external pressures and myriad demands but also from their tendency to solely focus on outcomes rather than placing due value on their relationships with patients and their families. Consequently, when they perceive less-than-desirable outcomes that may not align with institutional objectives, they may feel that their service lacks significance. These reflections underscore the intrinsic worth of relationships. If our doctors could internalize the importance of these reflections and grasp the potency of their connections with patients, alongside their clinical responsibilities, it could help mitigate demoralization. Here's an idea for a small practice change that can make a huge difference: a study released last week found only 2% of people hospitalized for alcohol-related conditions received medication for alcoholism. That number drops even lower for the emergency department: only 1% of people who were admitted to the ED received a prescription for a medication for AUD. Can you think of any other chronic condition where, at best, 1 out of 50 people being admitted to a hospital receive a prescription for FDA-approved medication to manage that condition? This is an incredibly low-hanging fruit - I hope folks working in EDs and on medical inpatient floors read this study and set some performance initiatives around at least offering medications for AUD to the folks who can use them. #alcohol #bestpractice #addiction #publichealth https://lnkd.in/gghPbJvT

On Saturday I'm a speaker at the Craniosacral Therapy Association UK AGM. The title of my presentation is Evaluating Wellbeing - Measuring What Matters to Clients - the theme of the day is 'Connection'. Clinical evaluation is about the connection between clinician and client, about monitoring what is important to the client. This comes as part of the relationship established between the two and the way the client feels seen, heard and met. From the clinicians perspective using a patient reported outcome measure enables you to systematically evaluate the outcomes over time, staying connected to 'what was' and 'what is' for the client and for the duration of their treatment plan. Using the clients narrative alongside a validated measure can be a rigorous and great way to evidence the work you are doing. #craniosacraltherapy #clinicalevaluation #measuringwhatmatters #connectionmatters

When you are caring for a family member that can’t take care of themselves or have limited mobility, it’s important to remember that not all caregivers are capable of doing an adaquate job either. Even with the proper training, the ratio of caregivers to patients are overwhelming! Be mindful of what you can do, ask for help and remember that the caregivers are tasked with a BIG responsibility. Corporate care is a business. They have a bottom line, investors, overhead, ect. PRIVATE CARE IS EXPENSIVE! 3.5 weeks = $17,000.00 (2019) Staying healthy and taking care of yourself is the first step in PREVENTING disease in the first place.
