DONNE | Women in Music have released a vital report about women and people of the global majority in composition. It's a damning indictment: from the 111 orchestras assessed over the past year, here are a few of many important findings: ➡ Global Majority Women Representation Falls: Dropped from 2.1% to            1.6%.       ➡ Black Women Composers: Declined from 1.02% to 0.59%.       ➡ White Male Dominance: Works by deceased white men constitute an             overwhelming 78.4%, up from 76.4%. Kudos to the fantastic team at DONNE | Women in Music for their important work. Reports like these show us, starkly, how much more work we have to do and it’s great that that organisations like them are willing to do the work. "Despite years of discussions about the importance of inclusivity, the representation of women and global majority composers in the 2023-2024 season has marginally declined, signalling an urgent need for change in the classical music industry." Wouldn’t it be great if women in music saw the change women in football have? Women in music are underrepresented, underpaid and undevalued. A YouGov survey in 2022 found that just 13% of headliners at festivals were women. And some festivals like Glastonbury (yes really) had no female headliners. We are told it’s a pipeline issue (sound familiar…) At Out & Wild Festival 90% of our acts are female or nb. We are proud to work with Vick Bain from the The F List for Music to challenge male bias in music. As she says ‘There’s still a lot of sexism, and that can be overt or covert, and a lot of stereotyping, which is restrictive to women. Women in music education will be encouraged to go into music teaching, rather than performing’ There is a lot that the world of music can learn from football. Welcome to Equality Tuesdays at Evolved Music Group. Today we are focusing on the representation of ethnic minorities in the music industry. The power of music lies in its ability to transcend boundaries and connect people from all walks of life. However, the sad reality is that inequality persists within the music industry, particularly affecting ethnic minorities. It's time we recognize this issue and take meaningful steps to bridge the gap. Representation matters. Ethnic minorities have made invaluable contributions to the music world, yet they often find themselves underrepresented in key roles – from artists and producers to executives and decision-makers. This imbalance limits opportunities and narrows the industry's diversity of voices and perspectives. To foster change, we must actively support and empower ethnic minority talent. This means providing equitable access to resources, mentorship programs, and platforms for emerging artists. It also entails promoting diversity in leadership positions and ensuring fair compensation. Collaboration is key. By working together as artists, industry professionals, and fans, we can create a more inclusive and vibrant music ecosystem where everyone has a chance to shine. The festival’s managing body, Groupe Juste pour rire inc. (JPR), is facing financial hardships and has sought legal measures to avoid bankruptcy. JPR said the decision is aimed at finding new investors or potential buyers to keep the festival afloat. The challenges leading to this point include the economic strain from the pandemic and other industry hurdles, including rising costs and media mergers. The music community is invited to participate, with nominations now open. It offers a platform to recognize and celebrate the outstanding contributions of individuals in the Canadian music industry while fostering a more inclusive and diverse musical landscape. Canadian executive Golnar Khosrowshahi, the founder/CEO of Reservoir Media, one of the biggest independent music companies in the world, is an Executive of the Year hall of famer. This year, she offered this piece of advice: “Pivot to a path that allows for growth equally across your professional and personal lives. You should not have to compromise, but rather be empowered to find the route that allows for the multitudes present in you.” – Richard Trapunski Music Canada’s Game-Changing Update: Video Streams Now Count Toward Gold and Platinum Certifications Earlier this week, Toronto-based Music Canada announced a significant update to its Gold/Platinum Program for Single Awards: It will now incorporate official video streams into the certification calculations. Absolutely, it would be wonderful to see the same level of change and progress for women in music as we have seen in women's football. The underrepresentation, underpayment, and undervaluation of women in the music industry is a significant issue that needs to be addressed. It's inspiring to hear about initiatives like Out & Wild Festival and collaborations with organizations like The F List for Music to challenge male bias and promote gender equality in music. Breaking down stereotypes and encouraging women to pursue careers as performers, not just in music education, is crucial. By amplifying the voices and talents of women in music, we can create a more inclusive and diverse industry. New Post: TikTok Undercuts Artists With Claims of ‘Free Promotion.’ It’s the Oldest Trick in the Book (Guest Column) - https://lnkd.in/gpYwjvhk - For as long as there’s been a “music business,” creators have been fighting for their fair share, and modern history is replete with examples of corporations trying to shortchange music makers.   Case-in-point: AM/FM radio, where U.S. broadcasters have been getting away with paying artists $0 from their $15 billion-a-year revenue – despite the fact that music is their main input. Their argument? Because radio is supplying “free promotion” for the musicians, they don’t deserve a cut of the profits. Big broadcasters have been pushing this excuse since the 1930s.   Fast forward almost a century, and we’re now seeing this play out with new technology – most recently with the dispute betweenTikTok and Universal Music Group (UMG). Using the same argument as radio broadcasters, TikTok claims its platform provides “free promotion” to artists, and it’s therefore trying to undercut what they   pay for the use of their music. But UMG refused to fall for this ploy and has now pulled all of its content from the platform until TikTok agrees to an appropriate licensing fee. As a result, about one-third of the most popular recordings on TikTok, including music from Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Billie Eilish, are now unavailable on the platform. (And this trend may grow if the dispute expands to the publishing side of the business, with indie publishers’ TikTok license due to expire in April.)  Related Why Some Indie Artists Are Also Struggling With UMG’s TikTok Ban 02/29/2024 UMG is doing the right thing by standing up for its artists. The label is making the case that creators should be paid fairly for the use of their tracks, in line with other platforms. (It also seeks to protect artists from the harmful effects of unregulated AI and encourages online safety protocols for users, two things all of us should support.) UMG recognizes that the lure of potentially viral promotion is in no way a substitute for fair compensation to hard-working creators.  Long before social media, companies using others’ musical property have sought to avoid paying fairly for that privilege because of this outdated argument around “promotion.” They tried it in the case of piano rolls, silent movie theaters, retail stores, music venues and even peer-to-peer file sharing platforms like Napster and Grokster. In each of those instances, companies tried to underpay (or not pay at all) for the music on the bogus theory that creators should “just accept the promotion, be thankful for whatever they get, and be on their merry w

🎉🎉In a landmark moment for the UK music industry, today’s launch by Women in CTRL of their 2024 Seat at the Table report marks a pivotal turning point as representation of women on UK music trade association boards has risen to 52%. This reflects substantial progress since the inaugural 2020 report, where women held just 32% of seats. The report examines the representation of women in executive teams, including in CEO and Chairperson positions, across the boards of UK Music and the 10 music trade associations that make up the umbrella trade body. ⭐️Key Findings: 1️⃣52% of board members across the UK Music trade bodies are women. An increase from 32% in 2020 and 42% in 2021. 2️⃣16% of board members across the organisations are women from a global majority background.
