This may look like thousands of Girl Scout cookie boxes to you, but I see: 🌟 A group of committed adults (plus many others not pictured here) supporting a troop of 50+ scouts 🌟These adults all have work and family responsibilities 🌟 They all volunteer different amounts of time, resources, connections and expertise to the troop Without these volunteers our troop might not be: 🌟 A safe space for scouts of all identities 🌟 A troop where you can come as you are and when you can 🌟 A Girl/Youth-led experience guided by adults (instead of run by adults) 🌟 A place of opportunity for many who would otherwise lack exposure, money or the logistical abilities to participate How do you volunteer your time or expertise? IMPACT 23 Nonprofit Spotlight: Orange County United Way Purpose Moment Livi Kerszenbaum, MBA, Sr. Director, Corporate Social Responsibility at OC United Way, shared a personal story underscoring life's unpredictability. Facing sudden responsibility as her husband recovered from a motorcycle accident, Kerszenbaum emphasized the importance of support systems, savings, and access to assistance. Highlighting the 'OC Way' of community support, OC United Way focuses on three key initiatives: Financial Security, Student Success, and Ending Homelessness. These efforts impact over a million lives annually, addressing graduation rates, family stability, and homelessness. Kerszenbaum emphasized the human inclination to contribute socially, citing OC United Way's 211 program connecting residents to vital services. Engaging in community service, she noted, correlates with improved mental well-being and longer life expectancies. The presentation concluded with a call for audience participation in a purposeful moment—sending words of encouragement for struggling veterans. Happy Veterans Day from one veteran to another! TriCord Ranch Foundation is owned and operated, and our hearts are with our fellow veteran brothers and sisters. On this day, we honor all who have served in the United States military, both past and present. We thank you for your courage, sacrifice, and dedication to our country. We know that your service has not come without its challenges. You may have experienced physical wounds, mental scars, or both. But through it all, you have remained strong and resilient. You are our heroes. At TriCord Ranch Foundation, we are committed to supporting veterans and their families. We offer a variety of programs and services, including: Cord One Program: Helping through physical, mental and life lesson training. A three week program designed to empower us to become better individuals which in turn will improve our communities. We also have Cord Two and Cord Three programs that are being developed and will roll out once we open the first Ranch and Urban facilities. Job readiness training: We help veterans learn how to create, improve and submit their resumes. Teaching methods to engage the job interview with confidence. Helping them find meaningful employment after they leave the military by improving their job readiness skills. Art of Conversation: We teach how to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger conversation methods. Communication is key to any relationship, if it be our battle buddy's, friends, family members or a stranger. Support groups: We provide an environment for veterans to connect with each other and share their experiences. The article highlights the limitations of managing homelessness through temporary shelters and services, rather than addressing the root causes of homelessness. The article argues that power law distribution supersedes standard distribution in understanding homelessness because: 1. A small percentage of homeless individuals (like Murray) consume a disproportionate amount of resources, driving up costs. 2. These individuals often have complex needs, requiring expensive interventions. 3. Standard distribution approaches assume homelessness is a normal, evenly distributed phenomenon, whereas power law distribution recognizes that a small elite (in this case, the most vulnerable homeless individuals) require targeted, intensive support. The article suggests that Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) is a more effective solution than managing homelessness through temporary shelters and services.
