LanguageLine began its journey in 1982 and was originally known as CALL (Communication And Language Line). It was founded by Jeff Munks, a San Jose policeman, and Michael McFerrin, a Marine who became fluent in Vietnamese during the Vietnam War. Jeff and Michael recognized the struggle police officers faced when trying to communicate with the 65,000 Vietnamese refugees in Northern California. The extent of our infrastructure back then was a three-party phone and a box full of 3x5 index cards containing interpreter names and numbers. Both sat on a gas-powered dryer in the basement of a rental home in Monterey, CA, with our founders feverishly pairing callers with linguists who would be their bridge to understanding and empowerment. Their vision has grown into a business that today handles more than two interactions per second. Yet our mission remains the same: To create a world in which language and cultural barriers no longer exist. #LanguageLine #WhyWeStarted #GlobalCommunication #RefugeeSupport #CommunityAdvocacy #LanguageLineSolutions
