Did you know Rodeo Austin has a Scholarship Program? Last year they raised 3.3 Million Dollars. There goal is to reach 3.5 Million Dollars this year. THE SELECTION PROCESS: Rodeo Austin partners with select colleges, universities and educational organizations in Texas. Each entity is granted scholarships to award; they then review applicants and choose those who meet requirements set by Rodeo Austin. THE QUALIFICATIONS: The foremost element determining selection is financial need. Most of the students come from households with incomes less than $75,000 per year. In fact, without a scholarship college is just a dream for many students. Rodeo Austin Scholars must also be standout students academically. Ranked in the top of the high school class and A average students, recipients must maintain a 2.5 GPA while in college to continue receiving funds. Finally, the applicants must display community involvement. National Honor Society, band, theater, 4-H or FFA, and service organizations are just a few of the activities scholars have historically participated in. #didyouknow that according to The Education Trust, "In FY2015, 20 of Maryland’s 24 districts received less funding than the state said they needed... the gap between what a district should have received and what the district did receive ranged from $500 to $4,500 per pupil. The three districts with the biggest funding gaps serve about 200,000 students of color, nearly half of the state’s entire population of students of color, and were shortchanged by a total of $861 million." The state's inability to fully support students in their pursuit of education perpetuates the cycle of limited opportunities, lack of higher education and fewer resources. I believe what #BaldwinPreparatoryAcademy is doing is vitally important! 🙌 Students need real job skills coming out of High School whether they are going to college or not. #Communities and #Businesses need skilled work ready people! 🤔One thing I would love to see in their curriculum is an #EntrepreneurshipProgram like I went through at Fairhope High through the Robertsdale Career Center! It had a huge impact on me. I cannot remember the name of the instructor back there, but I remember him, a gray haired man with a mustache is all I can recall, but he definitely made a difference for me in that program! 🎓Students need skills that can translate into dollars in good jobs out of the gate so that they have more choices when they get out of High School! Those choices could be: 1️⃣ A good paying full time career that they are already skilled for. 2️⃣ A part time job in a skilled position that helps them fund college to further their education. 3️⃣ An #EntrepreneurshipTrack that helps them realize they can use the skills they gained to build a business and employ others! This is an example of "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic." It doesn't matter if these schools embrace their inner-Power Rangers and merge into a larger school. Simply put, the number students interested in higher ed is rapidly decreasing and that isn't changing. The responsible course of action is to accept that an institution is closing and to handle this responsibly. Opinion pieces such as this one is just a pipe dream. ----- "How do we prevent some of these important institutions from disappearing over the next decade? My proposal is that clusters of three to five colleges join forces as part of one organization under an integrated supporting-company structure. A nonprofit supporting company would become the sole member (think of it as tantamount to a sole shareholder) of each participating institution. The colleges partnered in this supporting company structure would each retain their names, identities, accreditation, audited financial statements, assets and liabilities, and fiduciary boards of trustees. We must now carry the torch so that higher education opportunities are within everyone's reach. Pell grants and scholarships have been essential funding sources for my college education. Supporting academic endeavors of your workforce contributes to employee retention and satisfaction when an employer invests in training and development within & outside the organization's scope of work. I am thankful for the organizations I have had the privilege to work for that encouraged and supported my decision to grow scholastically in subject matter unrelated to the industry.
