Our latest study, published in Cell Press iScience, reveals some surprising turns in ventilation history—and new thermoregulation insights for architecture today https://lnkd.in/exFNWUKy In this post [1/6] I’ll highlight the interdisciplinary process ➡ Year 1. Make friends with a brilliant architectural historian (Annmarie Adams). Argue about how an old ventilation system actually worked (Montreal’s Royal Victoria Hospital, 1893). Start archival detective work, taking Annmarie’s lead. ➡ Year 2. Do some physical flow simulations (with then grad student Alexis Deleporte) to explore a hypothesis. (Could this really be 19th-century precursor to modern heat recovery?!) ➡ Year 3. More physical flow simulations. More archival detective work.  ➡ Year 4. Get funding. Convince brilliant PhD candidate Anna Halepaska to join the project. Teach a graduate seminar on the topic of environmental design history as an excuse to read everything written about 19th century ventilation. Now the archival work and fluid mechanics theory gets more serious.  ➡ Year 5. Do another physical flow simulation, this time with a fancy Background Oriented Schlieren system. Finish the math, generalize the scheme, and explore potential applications. More archival work. Trace the concept back to the 1860s (the Centre Block of the Old Parliamentary Complex in Ottawa!) ➡ Year 6. Painstakingly co-author the paper. Test different journals to find the right home. Hey presto! Easy, huh? Just as the diagram below suggests. The best bit was working together with Annmarie, Anna, and several others, along the way. Countless conversations. So many dead ends. Discoveries are best shared. It’s fascinating to see how the Architecture students, faculty of fine arts, are leveraging computational design to optimize sightlines in proscenium theaters. This innovative approach allows for dynamic modeling and parametric seat placement, which can adjust various factors such as seat height, spacing, and orientation...etc. The studies go beyond simple Viewshed Analysis, providing a detailed analysis of the venue’s ‘visual health’ by offering a percentage view matrix of the stage. This allows the sightline analysis to be linked to a stage layout, production type, and stage depth. The visibility from each seat, including those in zones with compromised or no sightlines, is quantified in terms of percentages. This enables quick testing of different arrangements and optimization for a specific site, eliminating the need for hours of complex calculations. Sunday STEM Funday - New Year’s Edition Welcome to the first Sunday STEM Funday of the New Year! Today, let’s kick off with an exciting activity that combines the spirit of new beginnings with the fascinating world of civil engineering, brought to you by GWES. Activity: Time Capsule Design Project Embark on a journey to design and create a time capsule, integrating concepts of civil engineering and materials science. This project is perfect for understanding the importance of durable and sustainable material selection in engineering. Materials you’ll need: • A sturdy container (like a metal or plastic box with a tight-fitting lid) • Waterproof and rustproof materials (aluminum foil, plastic wrap) • Items to put inside the capsule (letters to the future, photos, small trinkets) • Decorative materials to personalize the capsule • A notebook for planning and documenting the project Steps: 1. Understanding Material Properties: Discuss the properties of different materials and why certain materials are better for long-term preservation. 2. Design the Capsule: Plan how to seal and protect the contents of the time capsule. Consider factors like water resistance, durability, and environmental conditions. 3. Assemble the Time Capsule: Fill the container with chosen items. Seal it carefully, using waterproof and rustproof materials. 4. Document the Process: Encourage kids to document their design choices and predictions about how the world might change when the capsule is eventually opened. 5. Find a Safe Spot: Decide on a safe and memorable spot to store the time capsule, or plan a small ‘burial’ ceremony. 6. I recently went to smart nation @cityscape While I was there I took note of the structural design and placements of each exhibits throughout the exhibition. While I was there, I had a goal in mind - which was to improve the overall experience for visitors. Some main improvements were to provide exhibits with language preference, increase staff efficiency and accessibility. To gather these main points, I used learned and applied several LUMA techniques such as contextual inquiry, journaling, bull's eye diagramming, thumbnail sketching and concept poster. I applied these LUMA techniques to construct interview questions and interviewed visitors and proposed to them some ideas of improvement to the exhibit, which all of them positively agreed. I initiated my group to work together and make a well-detailed concept poster which we presented to our lecturer for our assignment. Through this service learning experience, I learned about the significance of digital transformation in modern society and the challenges posed by digital divide. Digital transformation is the integration of digital technologies into various aspects of life, digital divide is the gap between those who have access to and can effectively utilize digital technologies and those who don’t. I have mastered 5 LUMA techniques, learned to lead a group project and explain to my group what I want from them with clarity.

I am taking a course in neuroarchitecture with the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture (ANFA)’s ANDREA DE PAIVA and very thankful for the last lecture by David Kirsh, which completely fascinated me (that’s where the magic of learning happens). “We encounter environments through activities. He experiences this space quite differently than a customer” says a description on one of David Kirsh’s slides. David’s proposal that we stopped analyzing spaces as Euclidean spaces and begun analyzing them as activity spaces once again showed the challenge for us architects. If we want to understand the human interaction with the built environment more fully, we need to analyze people as if their environments were a part of larger space-time where their minds, bodies and whole organisms operate, related to various goals - small daily goals and large biological goals. And as if their built environments were potentially a part of the external contributors to: Incomplete actions. Unrealised goals. Unsatisfied needs But also Facilitating those Unexpectedly good Bringing positive emotions It reminds me more of a work a CBT therapist does, starting with the case formulation… Funny example of how I think it can work. I google “David Kirsh” to gain knowledge about his research, so that’s the goal I realize by this activity. Meanwhile, google proposes another search for a person called similarly: David Kirsch, who is a personal trainer. The question proposed by google is “David Kirsch girlfriend” - google guesses which activity space one might operate in in relation to David Kirsch - the one where a goal is to mate. Just an example of how design (of a web browser) can become a part of two distinct activity spaces? Is there anyone who has been analyzing activity spaces in their architectural practice? #neuroarchitecture #architecture

Ah, 2012—the year when Oculus Rift kickstarted the modern VR boom, and we all thought we'd soon be living in virtual worlds. Fast forward to today, and while we may not be attending virtual reality board meetings (yet), it's incredible to see how far the technology has come in creating real-world value. Check out this success story about the Collaprime CAVE system at Leipzig University of Applied Sciences. Installed in September 2020, this isn't just a cool tech gimmick; it's an invaluable tool transforming architectural education and research. The CAVE system offers a fully immersive 3D environment, enriching learning experiences, fostering collaboration, and advancing research initiatives. For those of us captivated by VR's promise back in 2012, it's gratifying to see these technologies mature and deliver on some of their early promise. #VirtualReality #Education
