When we hear that nearly three-fourths of teachers and 85 percent of principals are “experiencing frequent job-related stress, compared to just a third of working adults” and that “59 percent of teachers and 48 percent of principals say they’re burned out, compared to 44 percent of other workers,” our hearts break! Education is such a difficult job, and today’s added demands have really pushed our professionals to the brink. September is #suicidepreventionmonth, a time to raise awareness and discuss this highly stigmatized topic. According to a 2020 NCAA survey of 37,000 student-athletes conducted in 2020, the rates of mental health concerns were 150% to 250% higher than those historically reported by NCAA student-athletes in the American College Health Association (ACHA)’s National College Health Assessment. Thanks to the support of the MERRELL FAMILY FOUNDATION INC, we partnered with Mental Health First Aid, a national program offered through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. This organization builds the capacity of mental health and substance use treatment organizations and promotes greater understanding of mental wellbeing as a core component of comprehensive health and health care. Through the Mental Health First Aid program, more than 2.6 million people in the U.S. have been trained to identify, understand, and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges. Our very own executive director Krissy Webb is among those trained to teach students the Mental Health First Aid action plan. The plan includes assessing risk, respectfully listening to and supporting the individual in crisis, and identifying appropriate professional help and other support. It's interesting what a few photos on social media can do! Over the last 6+ months, the Lethbridge College social media team has featured photos of one of the three plant towers that we purchased as part of a Suicide Prevention Strategy that I have been working on for the past few years. I received a grant from the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention to create a strategy utilizing Life Promotion which is a strengths-based, life-affirming approach to suicide prevention led by Indigenous Ways of Knowing where we studied the pillars of Belonging, Hope, Meaning, and Purpose on our campus. Student-led, students engaged with students and Elders from the community and campus to learn and understand these pillars. We have been implementing the findings and have had so many exciting things come from this work, including the plant towers. They are so popular with the campus community that we see people take photos, stop to take some of the herbs or plants (which we encourage and actually have some descriptive cards for each plant and how to use it, coming soon), and it even feeds the bunny in the daycare periodically for a treat! The tower in the Indigenous Gathering Place is focused on traditional plants like sweetgrass, which we hope to be able to use on campus for ceremony. These photos have turned into many reach-outs from other institutions and local organizations wondering how the plant towers are linked to positive mental health outcomes. I'm now busy sharing the strategy, the plant towers, and other successful outcomes like Crafts and Connections, a very popular drop-in group, increasing Doggy De-Stress days, a push towards volunteerism, the creation of the Pride Readers Book Club, and more that have all come from this strategy. The strategy has been keeping me very busy since I received the grant, only a few months into this position; and it will take years to fully implement and get grounded campus-wide, but in the meantime, I am responding to requests for presentations and have received excellent feedback from both an on-campus presentation and a Rotary Club presentation this week alone. I'm also sharing at a provincial conference for campus wellness centres in a few weeks, as well as about the work I have been doing on addiction and recovery support on campus (which is linked but separate from this strategy). I am excited to continue to unroll and grow the findings and to continue to share it with the community. On Sunday, the world observed Suicide Prevention Day, a day that highlights the urgent need to address mental health issues, offer support, and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health struggles. In light of this, it's important to recognize the role that educators, caregivers, and youth workers play in the lives of young people. And this is where quality and sensitively delivered mental health first aid courses come into play. Mental Health First Aid Courses Mental health first aid courses are invaluable tools for equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge to recognize, respond to, and support those facing mental health challenges. For those working with, living with, or caring for young people aged 8-18, these courses are a lifeline. As a Wellbeing and Transition Coach, my primary focus is on supporting young mothers as they navigate life after the birth of their child. We engage in regular conversations, addressing various aspects of their lives—finances, housing, relationships, and parenting. Our goal is to guide them toward appropriate services and empower them to overcome challenges. What strategies do you put in place to support young parents? Our strategies include: Linking to Support Services: We connect young parents with essential services tailored to their needs. Advocacy: We advocate on their behalf to schools, community organizations, and other relevant entities. Life Skills Coaching: Equipping them with practical life skills ensures they can confidently handle future situations. Can you share an impactful example from your work? Certainly! Let me tell you about a client I've been supporting for over 18 months: Education: We enrolled her in the Young Parents' Education Program (YPEP), allowing her to complete her secondary studies. Child Support: We applied for NDIS funding for her child, ensuring their health, development, and school readiness. Administrative Assistance: We helped her obtain birth certificates and access Centrelink payments. Housing Independence: Through housing services, she now lives independently with her children. Parenting Support: We connected her with family services to enhance her parenting strategies.
