This #WorldFoodDay, we wanted to reiterate the importance of supporting small-scale farmers. After all, without them, where would we be? At Farm Radio, we often talk about supporting small-scale farmers. But what even are small-scale farmers, why is it so important to support them and how does Farm Radio support them in a practical sense? Find out in our latest blog post! https://buff.ly/3rUCmMl

🌱500,000 ACRES AT RISK OF GOING DRY! ☠ "The curtailment order, issued May 30th, 2024, came without sufficient notice, leaving many farmers scrambling to decide between losing their already-planted crops or paying significant fines when they found out only on June 10th. The broader impact will affect potato warehouses, grain operations, and the entire supply chain, potentially lowering property values and affecting local businesses and schools that rely on property tax revenue". I would argue that people locally, nationally, and globally don't understand the negative impact this decision will have on food production, personal health, and economies for years to come if a stop isn't put to this movement. For example, Famous Idaho Potato plants will be unable to produce the delicious roots that complete meals world wide without the proper watering. Say goodbye to your beloved fresh cut fries! Idaho is having one of the best water years that its had in over a decade. The surface water levels are astounding with lakes and rivers to the point of almost overflowing. Additionally, Idaho has the Snake River Aquifer that is the life line of the state for people, animals, and plants alike. It is up to you to make a difference. **VOICE YOUR OPINION** https://lnkd.in/gQPKccCZ Governor Little's Office: 208-334-2100 https://lnkd.in/gCwMYkhr

This is such a great initiative! There's even a blank one that you can fill out if you are growing a novel crop, or grazing other livestock etc. The sign prompts people to stay on the footpath, while educating and informing them about what the fields (and farmers) are doing for them, with QR codes for more info - so simple and effective. Thanks for sharing, Alex.
Many of us enjoy walking in the countryside and will regularly see fields and ponder, 'What are they growing?'. I think these signs by NFU (National Farmers' Union) are a great resource for educating the public. Erecting these signs in fields not only helps to inform the public about what is being grown - and in what form we ultimately consume it - but also gives subtle nudging behaviours encouraging people to respect the land and keep to footpaths. I feel that behaviours are always more likely to be adopted if people can see how it directly translates to them (e.g. these are oats, you eat oats, so don't trample the oats). I hope that by better understanding our surroundings and having this information communicated in a clear and concise way, people will develop a greater appreciation for farming and will learn more about where their food comes from. There's a good range of field signs available here: https://lnkd.in/egUQDa84

Did you know that 94% of the water footprint attributed to beef is what's called "Green Water"? Green water is naturally occurring rainfall, which would have fallen whether or not the animal used it or not. I love getting facts from the Global Food Justice Alliance! And to add to that, from 1991 to 2019 U.S. beef cattle blue water consumption per kg of beef decreased by 37.6%. and total water use for the U.S. cattle herd decreased by 29%. I'd say that's a step in the right direction! You can check out the full study on that here: https://lnkd.in/dm7h_Xfq Then make sure to follow for more facts on ag!
