Land IQ is excited to share a valuable new data resource recently released by the California Department of Water Resources. Land use for the 2022 water year is now publicly available for viewing and download. This important resource categorizes over 15 million acres of land use into approximately 50 types with greater than 97% accuracy. California's agricultural and urban footprint are now available for five consecutive crop years. A Landcare Research rapid assessment of the Cyclone Gabrielle damage in hill country (Land Use Capability classes 6 and 7) resulting from the landsliding. The extent of severe damage was large, ranging from the Gisborne district, through Hawke’s Bay, and down to the Wairarapa. The total number of landslides, each typically comprising a thousand tonnes of soil, was over 300,000. Indigenous forest cover reduced landslide probability by 90%!! Anyone out there who still believes these land use classes should be in pasture??!!! It is very clear that market forces and current regulation have utterly failed to deliver appropriate land use in these areas. We need these land use classes back in permanent forest cover and we need an economic model and suitable regulation to get to that outcome. Every person that moves into a new subdivision in Northeast Ohio should see this. The soil quality of stripped, leveled land is so poor that there will likely not be healthy soil for the next 100 years. One of the reasons why many are fields of grass. It’s the only thing that will grow in such a miniscule layer of organic material
Do our new subdivisions contain enough healthy soil for trees and plants to grow and offer essential environmental services? Deep topsoil (of up to 300 mm) combined with deep, permeable subsoil (of up to 900 mm) provides an environment where a wide range of trees and plants can thrive. The volume of soil is proportionate to the resulting tree canopy: greater depth leads to larger trees which can provide stormwater management, cooling and other environmental services. The Commissioner’s latest report investigates this question and asks how current residential land development is impacting urban soil. Anyone who has seen how the many recent subdivisions in Selwyn, has witnessed "soil stripping".. and in Rolleston, our soil is more like a light coating over intense cobbles, especially once machinery has rolled about (subsoil? what subsoil?). No wonder so many of us have raised beds, rather than planting in-ground. On the flipside, subdivisions closer to the coast - such as in Lincoln - can have beautiful soil, which is why so much of it is classed as highly productive land. There's more to lose via current development methods, so perhaps directing builders to rocky ground raised beds isn't that much of a price to pay.. we just need a few bobcats plus a trailer of dirt when it comes to planting trees.

Runoff Measurement of Puruliya District. Runoff is one of the hydrological process, which influenced the various soil and water conservation and development program in a watershed. Here I am using soil type map, land use land cover map, rainfall data, Curve number method is widely used for predicting runoff volume. #runoff using #arcgis

If you want an accurate quote for land clearing, a site walk-through is key. It helps with identifying the type of vegetation, density, and other obstructions that need to be addressed.

Land clearing work is going to be varied in size and scope, and ultimately these kinds of considerations will determine the most effective way to proceed. Things to look at include terrain, density of vegetation, soil stability, moisture, species to be treated, and obstacles to be worked around.
