After CEO WILL, what's the next most important ingredient for Commercial Technology companies to pursue Defense business? THE BOARD. Let's now assume the CEO has the business case to pursue the Defense sector (great callout, Nick Miller). And with the business case, the Board is now also onboard to pursue Defense. For the company to EXECUTE, it's critical for the Executive Board to have true Defense experience growing, selling, and sustaining business in that sector given its uniqueness. I would argue an executive from Lockheed, Raytheon, or L3Harris who understands capture and proposals, security requirements, government budgeting, and influencing Programs of Record can help guide a company through the big picture realities of executing in the Defense sector from the vantage point of the Board. Case Study: Digital Transformation and IT Challenges at Tyréns AB Background: When the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a significant acceleration in the development of IT, Tyréns recognized the need to drive both internal and external digital transformation in their customer offerings. The departure of Tyréns' CIO presented an opportunity to establish a well-defined digitalization strategy, and the company opted to engage an interim CIO. Johan Dozzi, the Group CEO of Tyréns, says that "When someone leaves the company, things often move quickly, and the role needs to be filled promptly. Permanent recruitment takes too long, and leadership suffers. To avoid losing momentum, an Interim Manager who can start within 1-2 weeks can be brought in." Challenge: The engaged interim CIO, Birgitta Dahlgren, explains that strong leadership was imperative to bridge the resulting gap. Despite being a large corporation, Tyréns had not fully capitalized on the potential for synergy, making it necessary to identify cost-effective strategies and ensure efficient collaboration among geographically dispersed groups with operations in Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Eastern Europe. The challenge was to create an IT operating model that could facilitate collaboration and synergy while considering the varying needs of each country within the group. Solution: Birgitta's approach involved developing a proposal that gained management approval, and by the end of 2022, they had established principles and governance to support the new IT operating model. Although basic IT infrastructure had been set up in each country, achieving efficiency and quality required greater collaboration and finding common ground among countries with differing sizes and competencies. As Tyréns recognized the increasing importance of managing cyber threats, they established policies, educated their staff, and created a comprehensive framework to address potential incidents effectively. Success: The case study illustrates how effective leadership, and a well-defined IT operating model can streamline collaboration and facilitate synergy within a geographically diverse organization.
