Building on our 2021 Lakestar study regarding the German Financing Gap, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung recently featured an insightful interview with Verena Pausder, Chief of the German Startup Association (Deutscher Startup Verband), and Prof. Dr. Helmut Schoenenberger, Co-founder and CEO of UnternehmerTUM. The interview highlights the critical need for increased university support to foster startup growth. In related news, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action announced the winners of the concept phase of their 'Startup Factory' Leuchtturm competition last week. We would like to congratulate the 15 universities and their partners who were recognised for their 'Startup Factories' initiatives. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the startup ecosystem, promoting greater collaboration in science and innovation. Since 2022, Lakestar has been working closely with Prof. Schönenberger and UnternehmerTUM München to create Europe's largest center for startups, innovation, and enhanced collaboration. Together, we are dedicated to nurturing young entrepreneurial talent and steering the next generation of startups towards success. We are excited to continue our partnership with TUM, with our Founder and Chairman Klaus Hommels set to lead mentoring sessions in the upcoming months. We are pleased to announce that our latest research has been published in Research Policy! The study, titled "Venture Capital and the International Relocation of Startups" by CEFS members Stefan Weik, Ann-Kristin Achleitner, and Reiner Braun, provides the first systematic and reliable data on the international movement of startups. Previously, we had to rely on anecdotes and guesstimates, but now we have hard facts based on a unique dataset of 11,000 VC-backed startups from 17 countries in Europe. Key findings: 1. 6% of European startups relocate across borders, which account for 17% of all created startup value, and most of them move to the US. 2. Foreign VC, particularly from the US, is a strong predictor of relocation. 3. Contrary to popular belief, and perhaps most surprisingly, startups relocate when they are very young. We are also proud that Handelsblatt has featured an article on our research. The article, titled "Wie Europa die Abwanderung seiner Startups stoppen kann" by authors Achleitner, Braun, and Weik discusses how Europe can address the outflow of its startups. 🗞 Read the Handelsblatt article for more insights: https://lnkd.in/dXSvkD6M 📄 Explore our full research publication: https://lnkd.in/db8bq-EH #Research #Startups #VentureCapital #Innovation #Entrepreneurship #CEFS

💡The future demands more collaboration between not only single innovation actors, but between ecosystems. Innovation potential is to be found in every European corner, and we at SFF leave no region behind. Start for Future
📣 The future demands more collaboration between not only single innovation actors, but between ecosystems. Innovation potential is to be found in every European corner, and we at SFF leave no region behind. 💡Together as a team - interdisciplinary, cross-system and Europe-wide," is the answer from Start for Future (SFF). SFF is an alliance and entrepreneurship hub that brings together entrepreneurial universities and incubators, start-ups and large and small companies as well as public organizations. The alliance has set itself the goal of driving systemic innovation in Europe. To this end, SFF connects regional ecosystems, such as Munich, Barcelona or Edinburgh, in order to jointly support talent and start-ups, but also to enable co-creation and technology transfer between start-ups, companies, science and civil society beyond their own ecosystem. Highly interesting opinion piece on #Startups leaving #germany for good reasons? The sulutions proposed read: "In Germany, an expansion of the range of financing options is necessary, including the creation of specialised funds – be it for deeptech or for the defence sector – in order to be able to support the development of companies in a targeted manner and on an equal footing with the founders." This sound like the activities with the Zukunftsfonds and alike? What I find specially interesting that it seems as if future successful startups do anticipate their success already in earlier rounds and decide to change location before there is an urgent need to. Tobias, Sebastian, Christoph, Urte would you agree?

All the money in the world won't help against the inevitable wall of regulations any truly innovative company will run into in the EU and in Germany. In fact, that's one of the key reasons why the money is staying abroad: aggressive growth at the scale and speed that is being made possible by the less-regulated and highly homogenous (think language and currency alone) domestic market of the United States is simply not possible in the EU, except for a few exceptions. Thanks for sharing Norbert Herrmann #entrepreneurship #businessstrategy #policy #startups #vc #venturecapital
