Last week our Investment Manager Benedikt Porten attended the ZKNFT congress organized by WMC HEALTHCARE GmbH in Berlin.   Our key takeaways:   1. The German Healthcare System needs private investments in light of: a. an Investment backlog of >€50B – especially in efficient infrastructure enabling "Ambulantization" and software solutions b. Non-refinanceable liabilities on hospital balance sheets between €60-80B c. "Unrecoverable" deficits – around 80% of hospitals are in deficit with around €9B in 2023 2. Sector boundaries that lead to considerable inefficiencies 3. I went to the Treffpunkt Berliner Gesundheitswirtschaft at Ludwig Erhard Haus, so you don’t have to. Exciting panel talks and speeches and the chance to meet familiar faces is always good reason to attend. Here are my 4 takeaways that are crucial to keep in mind for anyone involved in the health sector: 1. The German medical device market faces challenges with overregulation, particularly in MDR re-certification. This is proving to be a deterrent for many manufacturers. 2. The escalating lack of labor is increasingly becoming the sector's most pressing issue. 3. We must shift our focus from solely protecting data to effectively utilizing it. 4. Despite these challenges, the medtech sector continues to lead in innovation, dedicating 9% of its revenue to R&D and consistently generating new patents. Definitely a sector to watch!

‘We need to think 20 years into the future’ Comment from Graeme Cameron (CEO, Pennine Healthcare) speaking at ABHI UK HealthTech Conference yesterday about NHS investment and strategy - up-front investment for long-term benefit. This is challenging considering the pace of med-tech innovation and the finite resources of the NHS, however, I completely agree that long-term thinking combined with a shift to a preventative model of healthcare is essential to sustain the NHS. Excellent talks from Dr. Vin Diwakar (Medical Director for Transformation, NHS England) - discussed the need to embrace digital medical tools/artificial intelligence solutions and increase focus on primary prevention to enable the NHS to flourish for the next 75 years - and David Lawson MCIPS on supply chain sustainability - shocking that ~92% NHS materials are not currently re-used. Rachel Power Chief Executive The Patients Association listed a number of barriers for patients: medical jargon, inequity of access, data protection concerns, and limited patient involvement in the development of services. Considering that it can take well over a decade for a new medical technology to be adopted it was not surprising to see this statistic from a recent ABHI survey - ‘71% believe the NHS does not do a good job of adopting and spreading technologies’. Hopefully, new approaches like NICE’s Early Value Assessment (EVA) and the joint NICE and MHRA Innovative Devices Access Pathway (IDAP) will help to address this problem. #medtech #ivd #diagnostics #patientaccess Roche Diagnostics UK & Ireland

For the last four days, Amsterdam filled up with 30,000 people from all over the world to help improve cardiovascular care at the #ESCCongress. The Virtual Heart Clinic brings together Luscii, Happitech, AliveCor to provide a comprehensive end-to-end solution for physicians for the screening and monitoring of their patients. 3- Physician do-ers and believers, and not countries, grants, or healthcare systems are the key to transformation, noting that reimbursement always helps with scaling up. 4- Our giveaway pens were a big hit with clinicians, after the virtual heart clinic ofcourse.
