SATURDAY MORNING (AUGUST 3RD) at 7:30 AM our amazing Who I Am Foundation volunteers in #Phoenix will be cleaning up the community once again! In honor of Kenny "Fanatic" Hogan, for this Community Clean-Up, our volunteers will be meeting up in the parking lot of Rodriguez Boxing Club, located at 1350 W Roosevelt St Phoenix, AZ 85007 NO OPEN-TOED SHOES Cleaning up loose trash is one of the best ways to pitch in for your community and the environment. Volunteering as a means to help conserve and protect the environment has a lot of upsides. Of course, the first is that you’ll be taking care of our planet, and it badly needs a little love given the myriad ways in which we’ve become adept at destroying it. But beyond that, volunteering for a cause you care about is a great way to meet like-minded people, make friends, and pull yourself out of the blues that sometimes accompany caring a lot about something important – especially if you feel alone in your endeavors. None of us like the sight of litter. Litter spoils the look of where we live but that’s not the only reason for picking up litter. There are a number of benefits from picking up litter that you may not have considered before. Volunteer-led projects such as these are one of the quickest, simplest, and least expensive ways to inspire more community spirit and civic action. A visually appealing community increases property values, attracts businesses, and improves the neighborhood's image. Beauty is one of the three most influential factors in community attachment, which means loyalty, to your particular town or city. IMPACT 23 Nonprofit Spotlight: Orange County United Way Purpose Moment Livi Kerszenbaum, MBA, Sr. Director, Corporate Social Responsibility at OC United Way, shared a personal story underscoring life's unpredictability. Facing sudden responsibility as her husband recovered from a motorcycle accident, Kerszenbaum emphasized the importance of support systems, savings, and access to assistance. Highlighting the 'OC Way' of community support, OC United Way focuses on three key initiatives: Financial Security, Student Success, and Ending Homelessness. These efforts impact over a million lives annually, addressing graduation rates, family stability, and homelessness. Kerszenbaum emphasized the human inclination to contribute socially, citing OC United Way's 211 program connecting residents to vital services. Engaging in community service, she noted, correlates with improved mental well-being and longer life expectancies. The presentation concluded with a call for audience participation in a purposeful moment—sending words of encouragement for struggling veterans. We live in a world that is hyper-focused on “me,” “my,” individual liberty and personal freedom. Phrases and idyllic thoughts such as, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,” and the Golden Rule, “Do for others as you would have them do for you,” seem scarce and even Pollyannaish. However, like most hard-to-find resources, the value increases immensely for those who have an opportunity to behold it. Community partnerships can provide just those kinds of opportunities. Community partnerships bring resilience to our communities. Just as there are no single-legged tripods, the ideal community partners add stability and structure because that is their purpose and obligation. Ideal community partners, first and foremost, see their place in the community as obligations to be fulfilled, not just as opportunities to do good work and to be well known. The work is hard. Fulfilling their obligations requires grit and togetherness. Secondly, the ideal community partner is already involved in opportunities that align with your organization’s mission.
