The first in a series in which I grow increasingly aware of my mortality as we interview our current crop of interns.
It's a staple of every summer at LJC to welcome a new intern class to our offices! 👏 Working with students is always a ton of fun, and this year, we decided to put the class of 2024 to the test with some LJC trivia. Check out the first installment of our intern pop quiz as they tackle the trivia question: What year was LJC founded? 🤔 Here's a hint: while our firm was founded in 1999, it was incorporated with LJC in 2019. Check out their answers and let us know yours in the comments below! ⬇️

Q: Describe your initial perspective of the career you are interning at. After being an intern there for a few weeks, how have your beliefs changed, and what are they currently? A: When I first started my internship doing math intervention at the elementary school I wondered how effective that classroom situation really was and if it would actually help the students catch up to where they were supposed to be. I didn’t really understand how it worked and how to best help the kids understand. Now that Ive been at the elementary school for awhile I’ve been able to see how effective intervention is. I’ve seen the kids we work with grow so much and watching them start to really understanding something is one of my big highlights. Giving the kids a space where they can catch up outside the pressure of a classroom that might make them feel like they’re constantly falling behind us super important and really beneficial.

There's no better way to end my internship at 🐢 Giskard than by publishing an article! In this article, I investigate the optimal number of Q&A required for fine-tuning an LLM in order to enhance a RAG system. I also study the impact of fine-tuning with distracting context on model performance. The goal is to identify what constitues an efficient and cost-effective strategy for fine-tuning in that context. Link: https://lnkd.in/d3WUmSrc Key Findings: - Adding even a single distracting document to the context when training an LLM helps it distinguish distracting context from supporting facts during inference, thus making it more efficient. This is especially interesting in a RAG setting, where the retrieval step might bring out distracting context; - Fine-tuning Mistral-7B-Instruct for a single epoch on under 1000 training samples is very quick and can significantly improves results. I would like to thank the entire team and especially Rabah Khalek, Benoît Malézieux, Matteo Dora, Pierre Le Jeune and Luca Martial for their guidance during those past 6 months. I learnt so much alongside the team during the various projects I participated in, especially about multimodal models, RAGs and fine-tuning. I am extremely grateful to you guys!

Great experience today listening to Governor Wes Moore, who was featured on Maryland Public Television’s Examining Education town hall show. Gratitude to Travis Mitchell for the opportunity. Several key points about Maryland’s desired outcomes in education resonated with me. 1. Identify scaleable “best practices” for the implications of the pandemic on learning. 2. Invest in career pathways to ensure all graduates are positioned for economic success. 3. Marylanders deserve a 21st-century educational system, which means improved school facilities conducive to quality educational experiences. Another critical area discussed was school safety. It was quoted that 65% of guns are trafficked into Baltimore. Cristo Rey Jesuit High School’s Corporate Internship Program provides life changing experiences that translate to momentum for scholars in Baltimore City. An investment in Cristo Rey is an investment in the future of Baltimore. #CherishandChallenge #CollectivePresence #cristorey John Busse Susan Lynch Leigh Profit, CPA Patricia Hill
