Welcome to Chain Venturer, a series of intriguing conversations with crypto investors. For this week’s issue, we have Jacob Ko from Superscrypt Jacob is an investor and founding member of Superscrypt, an early-stage Web3 company, founded by Temasek, that invests in and supports innovative founders and projects across the entire ecosystem. Prior to crypto, Jacob helped Temasek build out its Australia and New Zealand investment strategy, covering deep tech and agritech investments. Here’s my conversation with Jacob. -- If you only have 30 seconds, here are the quick takeaways: • Superscrypt’s thesis is that blockchain technology is the backbone of the new internet. Good infrastructure ‘just works’ and should fade into the background. • Many RWA protocols might overlook the success of protocols attributed to their decentralized nature, which allows for seamless transactions without stringent requirements. However, for RWA platforms, legal compliance necessitates identity verifications, which limits immediate leaps in users, value, and liquidity. • RWA tokenization makes more sense for asset classes that are not tied to physical counterparts, such as treasury bills and private credit. • One key area of opportunity that Web3 needs to solve for is identity, reputation, and credentials — which will provide users greater control over their data. • Most investors that invest in crypto and VC don’t fully understand whether a project needs tokens or not and do it for the short-term price movements that liquid tokens can provide rather than focusing on the long-term benefits of building something novel. #venturecapital #crypto #web3 https://lnkd.in/gyYS__32

Diving into the future of digital value 🌎 In the ever-evolving realms of crypto and web3, "tokens" have become more than just a buzzword. Their influence extends far beyond, intriguing minds in fields like art, cryptography, economics, gaming, and psychology. Traditionally, tokens have been seen as mere units of digital value. However, they embody a spectrum of values - monetary, social, reputational, and more. This multifaceted nature makes tokens more than just a linear measure; they are vectors with both magnitude and direction, representing ownership, identity, and membership. The term "tokenomics" seems too narrow, focusing solely on the economic aspect of tokens. I propose a broader, more encompassing term: "Tokenology". This concept delves into the coordination of people, organizations, and computation towards shared goals, leveraging cryptography and mechanism design. But why are tokens so crucial? They are integral to the blockchain ecosystem, a new computational paradigm reshaping how we organize societies and capital. Tokens enable user ownership in large-scale open-source services (like Ethereum's "world computer"), digital property rights, and the creation of hyperstructures - protocols that operate indefinitely without intermediaries. Since the inception of the #Bitcoin blockchain, different other blockchains - L1s, L2s and sidechains have become a thing we are very much familiar with, more so that interoperability between these different blockchains became a problem that needed solving Thanks to interoperability protocols emerging to bridge this gap, there's now a measlms to seamless communicate and transact settlement across different blockchains. Amongst the niche - the interoperability protocols, there is a current cold war for market shares and one of the ways to win this war is through the publicity airdrops bring and hence the recent airdrop craze.
