I'll continue to say it. Every company will become a media company. I don't care if you're selling tech, ketchup, dog leashes, or pictures of Abraham Lincoln (I'd buy one). You will need to think of how you're going to use video media to get your message out. And not just one commercial, TikTok ad, or Super Bowl spot. You need a constant drip strategy. Does that mean you need to spend BIG bucks like Best Buy? NO. The big guys are not at an extreme advantage. In fact, many are at a disadvantage because of their own bureaucracy, processes and slow turn around. That's not to mention viewers social platforms and YouTube often trust the local underdog over the institutional giants. Those problems can be overcome, but they're problems a lot of us don't have. TL;DR = Your company is also a media company. Embrace it. ---- Am I wrong?

Theaters are treading water still, with recovery from COVID much slower than hoped. That increases the value of any credible movie, no matter what its studio’s financial stake. Projections for the 2024 box office are grim, with the early consensus of around $8 billion, barely up from 2022. Approaching 2024, the fading superhero trend makes predicting $1 billion blockbusters a challenge. While there's a chance for future superhero hits, it's not guaranteed. This uncertainty presents issues for the industry, especially for exhibitors relying on such successes. The article underscores the difficulty of replicating the success of films like "Everything Everywhere All At Once," emphasizing the risk due to its execution-dependent nature compared to the reliable appeal of peak Marvel. Navigating this landscape involves strategies like focusing on resonant IP, effective budget management (leaning towards $150m over $250m), caution with high above-the-line fees, maintaining franchise quality, and exploring smaller, genre-driven investments in the $15-25m range. Examples like "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and "Five Nights at Freddy’s" showcase success through outstanding content or leveraging established IP with a dedicated fan base, offering alternative paths in the evolving film industry.

“The failures of this year and beyond, coupled with the lack of originality and the need for newness that actually works. The risk is that we’re boring the audience with the same old sh*t.” -Studio Executive Myriad stats from the National Research Group’s recent study on 2024 support studio bosses’ anxieties. NRG’s polling shows that 69% of moviegoers want more original movies. If the audience is to expand for #originalmovies, studios need to put their money where their mouth is, and that resides in a studio commitment of marketing dollars and zeitgeist promotion, coupled by long theatrical windows. Consider the three top-grossing movies in 2023 that weren’t based on pre-existing IP, franchises or brands (i.e., Pixar): The auteur Christopher Nolan-fueled Oppenheimer at $326M, the red-state-led Sound of Freedom ($184.1M) and Blumhouse’s dancing bot, girl-promoted M3GAN ($95.1M). Oftentimes, while #studios cry “we need original,” they only spend to the specifics of a movie’s budgetary economics and the limitations of a movie’s audience. It takes gut and faith to break the mold, not necessarily a calculator and a P&L statement. The challenge the industry faces is getting quality, theatrical product out there on a continuous basis to consistently engage the habit of moviegoing. None of the major studios are looking to put the toothpaste back in the bottle and practice theatrical day-and-date releases on streaming. Given that jump in home viewing, theatrical continues to be the best way to lead with a movie’s chin and to raise its profile, delivering ancillary riches in the long run. Says Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Vice Chairman Adam Fogelson, whose studio broke $1 billion worldwide for the first time in five years this past year: “There’s no question about the value of a theatrical release. Our relationship with Shepard just continues to get bigger and bigger. Already in 2024- our team has already filmed in three different cities, not to mention being very close to finalizing an 8-part How-to Series that was filmed in our home studio in Atlanta. This video below was from our shoot in San Antonio last month. We sent our Producer/Director Josh Angus out to The Lone Star State to capture some Shepard-related footage at the Tech Advantage conference. One thing about partnering with Consume Media is that for out of town shoots, we will ALWAYS send out at least one member of our team to out of town shoots. Often multiple individuals depending on the size and scope of the project. I've heard horror stories from clients who have had similar projects, where production companies just contract out the entire gig- which ultimately leads to a mismatch between the goal and result of the project.
