On Monday, June 10, Kumon North America Associates participated in a Mental Health Awareness virtual workshop. Sponsored by Kumon’s DEI Task Force, the workshop aimed to emphasize that everyone has mental health, and just as it’s important to be cognizant of our physical health and well-being, we should also be mindful of our mental health and well-being.
Kristina Zurich, a lived experience consultant and mental health advocate, was the host and moderator for the event. She offered insights on recognizing when you may need to do a “check-up from the neck up” and provided strategies for managing everyday workplace stressors through both preventative and restorative practices. She also provided guidance on how to respond constructively, empathetically, and within company policy when we reasonably suspect that a colleague may be experiencing mental health challenges. The workshop also acknowledged that although destigmatizing mental health challenges is critical, personal privacy is also paramount.
Kristina also develops school- and community-based educational materials and facilitates corporate trainings on a variety of mental health topics. Learn more here: https://www.tc.fitness/. She has worked as regional CEO for National Alliance on Mental Illness.
Kumon’s DEI Task Force is looking forward to continuing the conversation around mental health as it influences every area of life inside and outside the workplace. Next steps aim to include smaller groups and specifically focused topics for more effective learning.
