It's hard for me to say Happy Mother's Day. Amid the flurry of cards and flowers, I can't help but think about America's $1.6 trillion annual gender wage gap, the well-documented motherhood promotion penalty, and the growing cost of childcare that has pushed millions of mothers out of the workforce. It feels incredulous that in a society that professes equality we have yet to elect a woman president or achieve anything resembling gender parity among Fortune 500 CEOs. (We're currently celebrating 10.8%) I love my children, and yet I struggle with the expectations of motherhood. How does anyone work a full day, get dinner ready by 6pm, and still have the mental capacity to navigate toddler bedtime negotiations without completely exploding? I have a beyond equal parenting partner, incredibly involved grandparents, a nanny, and a preschool, and yet it always feels like we're just barely holding it together. How the heck does everyone else do it??? Let's do more than celebrate moms one day a year. Let's hire them, support them, promote them, and elect them. None of us would be here without them. ✨Theme of the month: Supporting Working Parents Did you know... When a child is born or placed with a family, parents can share their leave and pay between them? They can choose to be off work together, take it in blocks or stagger the leave and pay. This is known as shared parental leave. Shared parental leave is a policy that allows parents to share the responsibility of caring for their newborn or adopted child. It provides greater flexibility and options for parents to divide the leave and care between them, rather than following traditional gender roles. The primary goal is to promote gender equality, encourage fathers or partners to take an active role in childcare, recognising that both parents have an equal responsibility and right to be involved. 🌍 So, know that you may be asked by a father or partner for a period of shared parental leave which could be up to 50 weeks and 37 weeks of the statutory pay. Subject to eligibility criteria being met, an employer has to accept this request and follow a process to get it in place. Ordinarily this will be published in your handbook - be sure your team are aware of this right to leave and publish your policy on it. This is such a powerful video. And I can hear a sigh. Of course, it’s not just parents that have to hold personal and professional realities. And yes, most parents (myself included) chose our beautiful chaos. And yes, there are tough days. And no, it’s not an employer’s problem, or for non parents to be expected to pick up the slack. No, nobody is looking for favours. But when we work together to bridge the gap between what we’re not saying and what might be possible, we’re failing to find the win-wins for our parent employee population who, by the way, have experienced a level of personal and neurological growth that most leadership courses couldn’t even hope to re-create. Imagine what’s possible when we harness that?! What can you do? If you’re a parent, be proud of your growth and commmunicate upwards, collaborating for the short term win-wins and long term opportunities. If you’re a manager, don’t be frightened of saying or doing the wrong thing. Just ask your team member what they need most that’s within your gift to give. If you’re an employer, think about how you’re creating psychological safety for your managers and your talent to have the conversations that loosen the bottle top of emotions just enough to communicate, collaborate, to feel like they still belong, and to perform. I promise you. This is where true talent retention, performance and progression is rooted. Have an awesome Monday people. Show up like a human, and not just a job title.

According to the US Census Bureau, first-time dads are more likely to take time off than ever before after the birth of their first child. Before 1975, only 7.5% of dads took time off work after the arrival of a new baby, but between 2016 and 2019, 66.5% of fathers took some form of leave. Here is what I found out: 1️⃣ Sweden's parental leave policy allows both mothers and fathers to share 480 days of paid leave, encouraging equal parenting responsibilities. 2️⃣ In Swedish society, taking time off work for parental leave is highly valued and admired, fostering a culture that supports work-life balance. 3️⃣ Research shows that increased paternal leave can positively impact child development, promote gender equality, and boost women's career prospects. 4️⃣ Companies in Sweden actively encourage male employees to take their parental leave, reducing the stigma attached to men prioritizing family over work. 5️⃣ This societal shift has led to increased involvement of fathers in childcare, leading to more egalitarian relationships and happier families. 📝 Obviously, most couples still don't split leave equally, and the income gaps can discourage lower-income families from utilizing full leave. 🌟💼 But that's an entirely different discussion. We have got some pretty good initiatives here in Australia as well.
