Getting an out of office message from someone in trucking/brokerage always cracks me up. They say all the right things until the end where it says "But, if it's an emergency, call my cell phone at 555-555-5555". What they are basically saying is: "I'm out of the office, doing some things with my family. I can't reply as fast as you are used to, but if you are a shipper and you are offering business, I'll drop everything and get it done. If you are an employee at my company asking about when I'll pay up for my March Madness bracket, I'll talk to you Monday when I'm back!" Everyone should be customer/service obsessed, and this is a 24/7 business that runs 365 days a year. However, if you have the right structure, and can rely on teammates that are equally obsessed with the customer, you can actually unplug and trust that things go smoothly. Not many shippers want to do business with 1 person. They are doing business with a TEAM, A COMPANY, and a BRAND that they can trust to keep their product safe and arrive timely. Last quarter than were an unusual number of name-brand suppliers that changed their electrical reps / lighting agents. Some were "simply" relationship changes (and some were long-term relationships) and others were due to agencies moving into new territories. The question becomes why? And then there was the Forward Solutions acquisition which generated conversation and from which there looks like there will be fall-out / line changes that will ensue. The question comes back to "why the changes?" What are suppliers looking for that some longtime agents are not able to provide? Or is it changing personnel on one or both sides, hence relationships need to start anew? Or is it a skill-set issue? Or aging and/or lack of investment back into the business? The rep / lighting agency business is seemingly getting ready to go through a generational change, much like distribution has been undertaking.
