5 Essential Steps to stucture a successful Employee Resource Group! I was talking to some new network leaders recently, and one of the common themes is how to structure their "year 1", and ultimately create a successful Employee Resource Group (ERG). Here are five essential steps to get started... 🍬 1. Define clear objectives and goals Identify the primary purpose of your ERG. This is oddly missed sometimes - Whether it's supporting a specific demographic or driving a more inclusive culture, having clear objectives guide your group's activities and measure its success. Bonus tip - Write them out!!! 🍬 2. Secure Executive sponsorship Having support from senior leadership is crucial. Executive sponsors can provide resources, visibility, and advocacy, helping your ERG gain traction and credibility within the organisation. I've had some great Exec sponsors in the past, but these don't always come easily and you have to work hard to find them! 🍬 3. Develop a strong Leadership team Empower passionate employees to lead. A strong leadership team can drive the ERG’s initiatives, motivate members, and ensure the group’s sustainability. I have always added a "Deputies" strategy too - so if yourself and co-chair ever need replacing, people are being developed for this! 🍬 4. Engage members with regular activities Host a variety of events and meetings to keep members engaged. From workshops and networking events to social gatherings and community service projects, diverse activities cater to different interests and keeps the network fresh! 🍬 5. Measure and communicate actual IMPACT Regularly assess your ERG’s progress towards its goals. Share successes and learnings with the wider organisation to highlight the ERG’s impact and encourage further involvement - and make this regular! It is so easy for people to forget the wins unless you make something of it! There's this quote that really hits home for me: "Leaders must proactively manage and mediate these conversations to prevent discord and ensure their teams remain focused and cohesive." It's not about silencing different viewpoints (heaven forbid!), but creating an environment where respectful dialogue can thrive. Think of it as hosting a dinner party where politics is on the menu, but food fights are strictly off-limits. 🗺️  Now, let's talk decisiveness. High-performing leaders aren't just decision-makers; we're conflict navigators. We're like the GPS of the corporate world, but instead of recalculating routes, we're recalibrating conversations. Christophe Weber, CEO of Takeda Pharmaceutical, puts it brilliantly: "When tackling contentious issues, leaders who are good at engagement give everyone a voice but not a vote... Consensus is good, but it's too slow…" In other words, listen to everyone, but don't expect to make everyone happy - unless you're handing out free puppies. 👄 This approach is key to building a high-performance culture. We're talking open dialogue, aligning team goals with company values, and using communication strategies so effective, they'd make UN diplomats jealous. It's like creating a corporate Avengers team - diverse superheroes united by a common mission. (Ok, ok. I am the mom of teen boys).
