Your leadership language matters. I remember my first. Were you a blue person? Yellow? Green or Red? Mike Lasday would lead groups of us at Envision to understand where we sat on the color wheel so we could better communicate and understand our peers. I learned about myself, but more importantly about the other people that I worked with. It built EQ (before EQ was trendy) to better understand your peers. Fast forward these 20+ years and I've done DiSC, Accountability Wheels, Predictive Index, Emotional Intelligence, etc., etc. My most recent favorite was the work we did at Quickbase with the leadership team around The Leader You Want to Be by Amy Jen Su. After our extended leadership team read the book, we all had a common way to describe and coach to what we were seeing in each other. Were you being Leader B or A today? How can you get back to being the kind of leader you want to be? No matter which of these practices you pick, as a leader you must pick 1, maybe 2, and ensure that everyone on your team speaks the same language. This common language serves as a bridge to connect one another in challenging times. To coach and to lead. Some Summer months are slow, so this might make a good time to hand out an article and rather than just spend team meetings to talk about projects, how about some team meetings to serve as a book club to develop skills? It might be how you hit those goals come fall and Q4.

Enablement & L&D friends - I'm looking to make an investment in my own development but wondering what you all are finding is worth the ROI for either paid memberships or conferences. Anything that you are engaged with that you feel like has been a good upskilling of your own skills?

Wow wow wow! I am so proud of the Altrata team this morning. We just closed our second largest month EVER and it’s the third straight month of record performance. Everyone from Legal, to Ops, to our Execs and of course our Commercial team have been leaned in to make this happen. And this hasn’t happened by accident. We are focused on pain points in the selling process and reducing friction. For the last 5 months we have focused on qualification, urgency and accuracy in our deals. And frankly you can feel the excitement and can do attitude across the board as everyone looks at how they can contribute. This mindshift change has been huge and the entire team should be so proud of what they have just accomplished. No time to take a breather. Back to 0 on June 1. Couldn’t be more excited for Monday! Cheers all.

For those who are looking for work, a little Friday feedback. I've read somewhere closing in on 900+ resumes in the last 2 months. First - Yes, I read them all. There is no AI machine screening candidates for me. I click on each name, read the personal information and your resume and then create a score card for each person. Recently I gave some feedback to someone in my network about their resume. It actually looked pretty good! Great formatting, easy to read (THANK YOU SIZE 11+ FONT!) and 2 pages (seriously for the love of all of us your resume should not be longer than 2 pages. Shocking how frequently I see 3, 4, 5 or even 6 page resumes). Here's the pro tip on how I scan. I open and zoom down to your last title, and the description. If there is a match, I go up to the Summary and start reading down the resume. But if I don't see a good fit in that first title/description you've written I'm probably not moving on. That's the place you MUST grab me. I gave some feedback based on what I read in that person's first paragraph. Admittedly I was doing a few things at once and wanted to get some quick input to him. But the feedback was incomplete and... wrong. I missed some great highlights in other places in his resume because I was moving quickly. When I went back to day to give some more 1:1 feedback I saw it. The description in that job title didn't match the impressive bullets below, but I didn't catch it. I'm not perfect. Recruiters and hiring managers aren't perfect. There is limited time and hundreds of applicants. That spot on your resume really needs to speak to the person you are trying to reach and for the role that you are applying for.

7 months ago I joined the team at Altrata. Every time the 17th of the month comes for the last 6 months I think of all the things I have to share from what I’ve learned. But I’ve been too busy “doing” and, quite frankly, having fun to organize my thoughts. I’m 20+ years into my career and it finally feels like it’s all coming together. The lessons, failures and wins, I can more clearly see now what I needed to learn. The time that I got to take a back seat and watch my mentors and the leaders I worked with, I can apply now. The times I tried something and it failed, yep I don’t regret those moments I learned something and am trying again. I’m still learning every day and that’s what I love so, so much with this team. Your career is a beautiful mosaic of experiences that you get to thread together. Even if you aren’t sure how it applies right now, pay attention. Listen. Know the business, financials and metrics for yourself. Measure your impact. Don’t try- do. Fail. Fall on your face. Win and jump up and down on your next teams call. I’ll be here cheering you on.

Since I know a LOT of people in the Low Code space, sharing for reach! Let's help this student gather some insights.
Calling all low coders! A student at Vrije University Amsterdam needs our help collecting insights on low code development platform usage and its effects on governance structures within organizations. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete, and it’s structured to ensure the confidentiality of all respondents. The student is accepting responses until May 27th. Please promote to your network! Sharing for reach. Happy to make an introduction to Eric in support of this important cause.
In the past year, our Sidney Mae Olson Rainbow Fund volunteer team has created beauty out of tragedy. Now, I need some marketing help to grow our impact even further. I'm looking for a volunteer marketing program manager to help me a few hours a month with digital marketing, events marketing, email outreach, and media coordination. This would be a great role for an early career marketer or someone just looking for a fun and meaningful side project. Please reach out to me directly if you're interested. Inspired by the spirit of our daughter Sid, who was killed in an intersection last year, the Rainbow Fund is a Massachusetts-based non-profit focused on creating environments that foster health and curiosity in young children. In the past few months, we've successfully advocated for safer, more livable towns, granted scholarships to open up early education to families who can't afford it, and inspired 100+ kids to love active lifestyles with our running programs.

Pro Tip of the day! If you send me a follow-up email that says "Any thoughts?", I need to be able to reference the content you sent before. Otherwise my thought is no.

Rockin some socks today to celebrate our differences! With so much focus on DE&I in the last 4 years, today on World Down Syndrome Day, I want to recognize and remind everyone the importance of inclusion. The best place to start when thinking about inclusion for all people is to assume a person can. People with Down Syndrome CAN and are ABLE. We are the ones who need to think differently about how we ensure that everyone can join, participate and contribute. Let’s celebrate our differences and think about how we can be inclusive to all today, and every day.

1moIt is funny how many assessments we did together back at Envision. I always tell people how fortunate I was to have that level of self-reflection and EQ building at such an early stage in my career. I love the idea of an article or podcast, anything different to shake things up a bit and get people thinking about leadership from as many angles as possible.
