Last year I had the privilege of presenting to a room full of job seekers on how to use their transferable skills when transitioning into the tech space. I put so much time & energy into creating a PowerPoint, making sure it was perfect & articulated every skill/detail I wanted the job seeker to know when preparing to transition. Don’t get me wrong, my presentation was GREAT, but if I knew about Gamma back then, it definitely would’ve been a lot better. I’ve seen a lot of post lately about how “commenting for reach” is ineffective & not truly helping candidates find & land jobs. I’ll have to respectfully disagree based on the many messages I’ve received in my inbox just this week alone! Multiple job seekers have reached out thanking me for liking, sharing & “commenting for the amazing candidates in my network”. A few telling me they are waiting for the results of their final interview & found the opportunity based on my comment showing up. To my followers, thank you for allowing me to use my LinkedIn presence as a way to present amazing job opportunities I come across! About a year ago now I received some very mean messages regarding my hair right here on LinkedIn. That person mentioned how black hair was a problem & suggested I tone it down or cut it all off. I never responded directly but made a post in support of advancing The CROWN Act & being thankful to have worked for companies that respected my hair texture. Today we celebrate National CROWN Day 👑 (Creating a Respectful & Open World for Natural Hair), which aims to end race-based hair discrimination in schools and workplaces by prohibiting the denial of employment and educational opportunities based on hair texture. As a recruiter, I’m no stranger to a bad interview experience. 6 rounds of interviews for one company & I never heard back. Even after being drilled with questions about how I personally maintain a positive experience for my candidates, still no communication weeks later. Throughout my recruiting career it’s always been best practice to provide updates to candidates regardless of good or bad news. Yes, there is a standard rejection template to be send out if you have any communication with the candidate up to the phone screen stage. This one may not be personalized & will usually have language like “We regret to inform you”. Any rejection communication after completing the first round of interviews would usually be a phone call. (Although rejection emails still happen at this stage). They’re tough calls to make but provides closure to the candidate & allows them to continue their job search without waiting anxiously on an outcome. This is what I followed at each company I’ve worked for & fully understand times have changed with the high volume of candidates on the market right now. With that being said, I think it’s more important than ever to have closing communication with the candidate regardless of the outcome. Some people’s lives are depending on it. Moving forward, I use my personal experiences to improve the Get Me Hired Kristi candidate experience & communication because I know exactly how it feels to be left on read. Just being completely honest… Back in the day if a company asked me to do any type of presentation, I would drop out of the interview process immediately! But times are different now. The job market is super competitive & I know a lot of us can’t afford to not complete the assignment.     As long as it’s a reasonable request, I’ve been using Gamma to save time on creating interview presentations. I didn’t get the job. Five 45-minute interviews that I studied for & I still didn’t get the job. But you know what I did get? Very constructive feedback! Feedback that allowed me to really think through my experience & enhance my answers to those behavior/situation-based questions. Feedback that made it me think “Okay, got it! I’ll adjust this for next time to make my interview even better!" I’m currently on both sides of the spectrum, as a recruiter & a candidate, & know that feedback isn’t always constructive if there’s any at all. As I work on enhancing the Get Me Hired Kristi candidate experience, I try to provide constructive feedback where possible. Especially with the increase of interview rounds that we are seeing in this current job market. “I’m so tired of interviewing & not landing the job!” 😩 I know I know but we got to stay consistent! Interview fatigue is real & often times we may miss a step or two because we been through the process sooooo many times before! But let me tell you… I did 3 interviews last week, all for recruiting roles & guess what? Each & everyone was completely different. Same type of role, different type of question. I had to study for each one separately As you land those interviews this week here’s a few things to remember when preparing: ✅ Research the company: What they do, mission statement & values ✅ Have your elevator pitch ready: Highlight your skills & what value you can bring to the company ✅ Practice answering your typical questions: Say your answers out loud using the STAR method, being clear & concise ✅Keep your energy up: I smile when I speak but stay excited about the role during the whole interview ✅ Ask the interviewer questions: I’ve found the most success with this one: What are some things your team does well & what are some challenges a candidate like myself could come in & assist with?
