This project consists of the construction of King County’s new RapidRide H-Line, which provided public transportation routes from Burien, White Center, and West Seattle. The H-Line is part of a larger program as an investment in convenience, innovation, reliability and service. It will also provide routes to other bus routes and the Link light rail. Other improvements include upgraded bus stops with new shelters, lighting, and real-time arrival information. Sidewalks, street crossings, and signals improvements around stations for pedestrians, bikes, and those with limited mobility. #iampublicworks #pnw #apwawa #npww #specialinspections #materialtesting

With major changes along Loop 1604 in recent months, San Antonio is working to meet the traffic demands now and in the future as the population is growing. "If traffic projections for 2040 are correct, officials say what is now a roughly 30-minute drive on Loop 1604 could become upwards of 113 minutes – or nearly two hours – if the expansion project were not underway." At the end of this project that is predicted to end in 2028, the stretch of Loop 1604 from Bandera Road to I-35 is going to shift from a four-lane highway to 10 lanes with a high-occupancy vehicle lane in each direction. Many Chicagoans make use of the bus system, which includes around 1,800 buses.🚍 Transit-oriented development needs to work for these riders, too. That’s why the Connected Communities Ordinance: - Counts more bus lines as high-frequency bus corridors - Extends TOD protections to any area that is within a 5-minute walk (1/4 mile) of qualifying corridors This is an especially important change for parts of the South and West sides that aren’t currently served by the Green, Red, Pink, Orange or Blue lines. #Buses #ETOD #PublicTransit #Transit #PublicTransportation #Chicago #ChicagoCTA

As their populations—and the number of pedestrian deaths—grow, Sun Belt cities Jacksonville Tucson and Memphis are rethinking their transportation planning strategies to improve safety and mobility for their residents. An article by Dan Zukowski, Julia Himmel, and Shaun Lucas in Smart Cities Dive reveals that “Nine of the 10 most dangerous states for pedestrians are in the Sun Belt, according to a 2022 Smart Growth America report.” ... In car-centric Jacksonville, “The [Jacksonville Transportation Authority] is working with the city of Jacksonville, the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization and the Florida Department of Transportation to focus road construction more on people and less on automobiles as they build additional roadways” by improving pedestrian and bike infrastructure along transit corridors, among other projects Florida Department of Transportation #highwayengineering #trafficengineering #bridgeengineering

This is the real story folks! Buses are doing stunning numbers in Metro Vancouver and the network is totally maxed out. 4 years ago, Route 323 wasn't really on anyone's radar, and today, it is so full that it is constantly leaving people behind at bus stops. On top of that, buses are getting slower! They're stuck in traffic more and more and more each year. Dollars that could be used to address overcrowding are siphoned off to stretch out the schedule, which helps no one. Between 2014 and 2022 TransLink spent $155 MILLION DOLLARS on "schedule maintenance" which reflects the cost of routes getting slower. Putting in something like a bus lane can be remarkably cheap, fast and effective. On many of our streets, over half the road users are already on a bus (vs in a car). Other regions in NA know this, and are acting on it. This is why Seattle has SEVEN TIMES as many bus lanes per passenger as Metro Vancouver does. Lots of work ahead - we need your support to catch up, and provide the service that Metro Vancouverites deserve!

How exactly is MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) going to build all these new stations when they have already had to cannibalize the budgets of other #transit projects, like the Campbellton Road and Clifton Corridor light rail proposals, to pay for the Eastside Atlanta BeltLine streetcar scheme? If the Beltline streetcar moves forward, there is no way that these infill stations are built in the City of Atlanta in our lifetimes. Just to be clear, the infill stations make sense to me. The $100-million-plus-per-mile streetcar no longer does, given the Beltline’s importance as a corridor for those who are #walking or riding #bikes and other #micromobility. https://lnkd.in/e5JTDDGS

I finally did some reconnaissance on the new Rozelle interchange through the week… I’ve driven cars on most continents and like to think I’m capable of making safe and proactive progress anywhere anytime… however, I defy anyone to make an incident free journey through the new interchange headed toward the city… what an unmitigated disaster… whoever is responsible for the design needs to be publicly named, shamed and flogged… the design will never “settle once drivers get used to it”… it is fundamentally flawed, confusing, absurdly over signed and so badly executed. There are so many different shapes, colours and locations of signage it’s like driving through a kaleidoscope of redundant distractions… all tunnels have a downward slope at entry and are festooned with speed camera warning signs… so drivers aren’t focused on safely navigating the tunnel, because they’re too busy fearing becoming part of the governments tunnel revenue strategy. To fix a lot of the problems, without demolition and construction, I think they can only focus on, deleting at least 50% of the signage, merging traffic far earlier in the new tunnels and dedicating a lane to Victoria road traffic on the ANZAC… every merge is happening way way too close to the bridge access threshold and nobody has time to make sensible decisions. in the case of Victoria road traffic they need to revise the 6 lane T-intersection driving 3 lanes left to ANZAC and 3 lanes right to Lilyfield. And give the ANZAC bus/car traffic priority and more room to get their merging done… 2 lanes going right to Lilyfield is and has always been stacks!! I’m no traffic engineer, but I’d bet my suggestions would improve most of the problems in the locations with the greatest complexity in decision making… I can’t see any other simple solutions without bloody big works occurring… #NotThatAnyoneAsked and #HeatwaveRantOver

The attached articles are worth your time to read. They describe what Columbus once was, and what it could be again in terms of its two greatest needs- affordable housing and effective mass transit. Other places are doing it successfully. We need to succeed as well. Rail is still the best option for getting cars off the road.

Columbus is like a microcosm of Ohio: a transportation system designed and built around moving cars instead of people (at least not efficiently). What makes this such a good story is the writer is a local young professional who has recognized that Columbus and Central Ohio need to up their game when it comes to having major development that's better coordinated with local transit and intercity passenger rail.
