Years ago I took my sales team to Carowinds Amusement Park for our sales kickoff event. The theme was "The Rollercoaster of Sales". We had such a blast that day! After our day at the park, we had a day of training to review our goals and plans for the year. One of the exercises was to list the highs and lows of a sales consultant. I took a picture of the results and came across it today. Sales is not an "easy" profession. It can be a rollercoaster every single day. It takes grit, drive, emotional intelligence, and strategy to be successful. How can you increase all of these things if you are in sales? Why you may not be closing as many deals as you desire... While it is important that we aspire to constantly be the best at what we do, improved performance itself does not always lead to increased productivity. Last night, I was thankful to witness a pulsating game between my favourite team Bayern Munich and Liverpool. And if there's a lesson I am reminded of, it is this: Winning a game is all about finishing in the right manner! Games are not always won by teams who merely dominate their opponents. Games are not won by teams who possess the most skilled players. When a team gets into the final third but often fails to convert their chances, they will still end up losing the game! Similarly, it is about taking the chances in our life, and making the best out of every opportunity we are presented with, which is going to define us a true champion. Far too often, I hear of stories where salespeople end up losing a deal which they have spent weeks or months to pursue, due to the lack of "clinical finishing". Due to poor mental conditioning and weak closing techniques or strategies, many salespeople often lose the opportunity to make the sale, even though they have done all the "right" things in the early stage of the sales process! I’ve had many deals slip in my career, it’s part of the game. One stands out. I was working with Douglas Elliman for months on a multi million dollar partnership. I thought I did everything right. ✅ Self-prospected (worked up to CMO through five layers) ✅ I got to power ✅ I had multiple strategy meetings ✅ Mutual action plan built Truth was I only did about 70% of the right things ⛔️I didn’t do a value analysis ⛔️I wasn’t as multi threaded as I should have been ⛔️ I wasn’t texting anyone ⛔️I frequently didn’t have next steps on the calendar They ended up taking the entire framework of our partnership across town to the New York Knicks at MSG. To add insult to injury? I got about five texts from colleagues sending pictures of Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez sitting courtside for the Knicks home opener. This is when I started using my own deal checklists. A rolling deal health score to ensure I’m consistently tracking to get to a decision. Keep your deal checklists simple, between 3-5 markers.
