While this picture may seem like 15 cases of apples to most, it represents something much bigger than any one of us. At Food Dignity, we invest in our local community by purchasing the surplus apples from Heller's Orchard to distribute to underserved communities in need of fresh produce. Rather than asking for free apples, we inquire about farmers' biggest risks of crop loss to prevent it and increase their profits. Our model acts as a risk buffer, taking a proactive approach to hunger relief. 🍎🍎🍎 Unlike traditional practices, our food doesn't travel thousands of miles. It goes directly from small local farms to small local nonprofits, served the same day it's harvested during the growing season. 🥬🥬🥬 By supporting our network of 43 Pennsylvania farmers, we create new markets and a food supply chain focused on equity, sustainability, systems thinking, and dignity. We’ve been asked if we think people who are homeless should be allowed to have pets Some people experiencing poverty and some with abundant financial means, we assure you, people who are unsheltered take as good care of their animal family members as anyone else. But we always observe that those who are homeless , we typically see an even stronger bond, as their animals are often their sole companion, motivation, hope, and protection. We see devotion, and the animal’s health and nutrition being put first. There are exceptions where animals are neglected or mistreated, and these cases occur at every socioeconomic status . Does every animal deserve to be spoiled? Yes. But remember, animals don’t care how expensive their beds or toys are, they care about how much love they get from you, and they care about being fed and safe. Regardless of how you feel about homelessness, don’t let your love of animals feed prejudice. The human animal bond cannot and should not only be for the wealthy. In this day and age, many of us are one crisis away from being homeless. Being sheltered and having family and friends to fall back on is a privilege. So instead of categorizing by quality of shelter, let’s support animals and their loving people in every setting. Everyone deserves access to care. With the New Year starting, I want to explore the concept of 'moral trade', Toby Ord's concept. The idea is that if you care about cause X and your friend cares about Y, you can both do a step towards each other's cause so that the world ends up in a better place. Ord's example mentions Victoria, a vegetarian for animal welfare, and Paul, donating to fight poverty, who engage in moral trade: she offers 1% of her income for poverty if he becomes vegetarian, aiming to align their moral beliefs through mutual concessions and periodic checks. Part 2 While this is just a snippet and it only has been one month, I’m beaming with pride to be apart of this organization that is filled with like-minded people who genuinely care about combatting hunger and making a difference. Going into this role I thought I had known a lot about food insecurity and the cycle of hunger, however, I have learned more in the last thirty days about this issue than I ever have before. FTB is truly on the ground doing the work - feeding not just the unhoused individual on the street corner asking for money that you see on your way to work, but our neighbors, our classmates, our co-workers, our friends, and our whole community. It truly is not about serving “them,” it’s about serving us. People go hungry every single day and no one should have to experience not knowing where their next meal will come from. Everyone should have the right to choose which foods they’re putting in their bodies. No one should have to make the hard choices of choosing to put food on their families’ plates, to keep their lights on, or to feed their pets. No one should develop diseases that are so preventable because all they can afford is unhealthy, processed foods. Feeding Tampa Bay recognizes that people face these obstacles every single day and has been a leader in finding ways to solve these issues and continues to innovate and evolve based on community need. To quote the good ‘ol Snickers commercial, “you’re not you when you’re hungry.” Overall, it’s been enlightening, informative, humbling, and some of the best thirty days a new guy on the job could ask for. Shoutout to my fearless leader Katherine Scaglione for bringing me on the team, empowering me to bring new ideas to the table, and for allowing me to take ownership over the programs that are apart of my role. This is just the start and I’m so excited to see what’s to come with this organization and team. Puppy Mill Awareness Day sheds light on the importance of adopting dogs instead of shopping at pet stores (which are often sourced by puppy mills).We must protect beloved animals by ending the cruel conditions that take place in puppy mills. Here are a few ways you can help: 🐾 Adopt a pet and spread the word to encourage others to do the same. 🐾 Spread awareness regarding puppy mills and the number of dog's lives lost due to neglect. 🐾 Help collect funds to support organizations working to end the puppy mill industry, and organizations taking care of homeless dogs.
