Hero To Zero In 2020, Gareth Southgate brought England to the European Championship final. While they didn't win, Southgate was hailed as a hero for getting England to its first final in a long long time. For a while, there were books and articles written about the England manager's great leadership. I remember also seeing a number of posts on LinkedIn talking about "the secrets" of Southgate's success. At that time, it seemed like he is the greatest British leader since Winston Churchill. Then England didn't do so well after that. Suddenly, from a great leader, he became an average football manager. No longer was his name mentioned in the same breath with "great leadership". Then guess what? After England's uninspiring draw with Denmark last night, Southgate is now called the "worst football manager in the world" by some. It is interesting to see how quickly opinions change in 4 years even though his management style didn't change. (At least as far as I could tell.) Many people judge someone's leadership ability simply based on short term results. Win today, you are the best. Lose tomorrow, you are worse than a piece of... fertilizer. It goes to show those people never really understand what good leadership looks like. (Don't get me wrong. Result is an important KPI. Head-hunting hits the headlines… (As a proud Yorkshireman, this pains me!) Last week, news broke that #manchesterunited had pulled off the surprising appointment of Omar Berrada from neighbours #manchestercity as their new #CEO. It can often be forgotten, but when stripped back it’s core, a football club is a business to the extent that it involves investment (in players, stadium, customer service, etc) and a return (from ticket prices, merchandise, sponsorship and broadcast rights). Much like the business worlds in which we operate, having the right leadership team and infrastructure to drive change and realise success is of paramount importance. Similarly (though not always), these high performers are fully employed, operating within a similar capacity and seen as a key player within a closely aligned organisation. So, how was such a significant coup orchestrated? Whilst the details have naturally remained confidential. We know that the club conducted a search for an executive, operating within industry, offering commercial expertise, with a proven record of successful leadership and a passion to help lead change. Berrada was reportedly identified, professionally pursued, with his services being secured in a timely and discreet manner. This type of approach wouldn’t be appropriate for many other roles within the organisation, but in this instance where a business-critical mandate needed to be fulfilled by an industry credible leader – they entered a process and conducted a thorough search. The end result? They landed their target. Whilst this strategy doesn’t guarantee that Berrada will be a success, his track-record does mitigate his risk of failure and his appointment is one that has seen energy and optimism injected into an otherwise failing environment. There are a number of interesting dimensions to these European Football Championships in terms of work and performance. The England manager has had beer thrown at him, because of questions about his judgement and perceived under performance. The interesting question is, should anyone in a job be the subject of this type of abuse, because of their performance? Just image going into work and having beer thrown in your face at the end of your performance appraisal. As he stands on the verge of history, with the finals on Sunday in sight, his performance is now apparently almost legendary. Clearly the idea of performance can be highly subjective. The same ironic point can be made about a number players. It is almost surreal how players like Bukayo Saka have gone from anti-hero often ridiculed in the press to a hero and much celebrated. Football is a job and, the same rules need to apply. We can't ridicule people at work, subject them to discrimination or allow customers to abuse them. We can't vilify people in a job, because of how we think they should perform. its frankly disturbing the level of abuse, these players and the current manager have suffered, in this so called modern day and age. The pressure is on for the England manager and team. Whatever happens on Sunday, there is a lot to learn from watching this England team, around how to manage toxic behaviours, how to stay cool under pressure at work and the importance of rising to the challenge. Much like football, our performance at work can be the subject of harsh criticism and unfair analysis. If you ever find yourself in that situation, just do a Gareth Southgate or Bukayo Saka and make history. #BestofLuck #England
