Japan’s Nikkei covers Urchinomics’ collaboration with Hokkaido Electric Power Company!
Hokkaido Electric Power Company is Hokkaido’s primary utilities and energy company, with economic, ecologic, and social interests in the long term success of the prefecture.
It is an honor to be able to work with such an important pillar of #Japanese society, and jointly improve coastal marine ecosystems, create meaningful jobs in rural communities, and further build upon the Hokkaido brand for #premium seafoods!
On a more personal note though, this collaboration has a particularly important meaning to me. When I first started Urchinomics years ago, I asked the sea urchin experts in Japan, what was their greatest concern about the future of their industry. Nearly all of them told me “climate change and the loss of our Ezo Bafun Uni in Hokkaido”. For context, Hokkaido Ezo Bafun urchins are cold water green urchins that reside primarily in Hokkaido and the Russian occupied islands to the north, and are reputed to be the world’s best quality sea urchins.
According to climate scientists in Japan, rising sea temperatures will push the habitable zone for the famed urchins further northwards. In about 3-5 generations, the majority of the biomass of urchins will likely end up in colder, Russian-occupied waters, while being displaced by more warm water tolerant Kita Murasaki urchins, or Northern purple urchins, as we have already seen in Aomori prefecture and southern Hokkaido.
While Urchinomics and Hokkaido Electric Power Company alone may not be able to reverse these trends, leveraging our temperature controlled land-based aquaculture technologies gives us a fighting chance to preserve and restore this unique fishery, while also tackling the pernicious problem of barrens caused by both species.
#Climate and #socialimpact are our driving motivation, but knowing that we can play a role in preserving a unique part of Japanese food culture brings me a lot of joy and pride.
