Recruiter interviews – a waste of time or a great opportunity?       The first stage in an application process is often a call with an internal recruiter. These can be seen as a necessary evil, a stage you must navigate to enter the real process.   I conduct hundreds of these calls/interviews every month and have provided a few thoughts on how you can use them to your benefit:   1. THE RECRUITER IS YOUR FRIEND, not someone you just need to get past – we will be arranging interviews, taking feedback, and negotiating any potential offer. Build a relationship with us, we can help you! 2. BE OPEN AND TRANSPARENT. We’re not mind readers and we can work better on your behalf if you share the necessary information with us (think salary expectations, if you're interviewing elsewhere, concerns about the role). 3. BRING YOUR A GAME. We may not be experts in every field, but we know what the hiring manager is looking for. If you impress us, this will be relayed to them. 4. WE KNOW THE COMPANY. Hiring managers know their role but we talk about the wider company every day – come prepared with questions about culture, product, and the company mission.   We understand that you want to meet the hiring manager, they are the person you’re going to be working with. However, if you follow these tips and work with the recruiter, you’ll have a more enjoyable, more beneficial, and more fruitful experience. 

A month in and a response rate of 10 out of 21 applications (approximately 48%) and securing 2 interviews out of those 10 responses (20% of responses, about 10% of total applications) is generally considered a good ratio in the job market I am sure I will be told differently. Here is a breakdown of why these numbers are favorable in my opinion. Response Rate 48% Response Rate: Industry Standard: Many job seekers often experience lower response rates. Depending on the industry and the competitiveness of the job market, response rates can vary widely. A response rate near 50% indicates that my applications are capturing attention. Application Quality: This suggests that my CV and cover letters are effectively communicating my skills and experience, making me stand out among other applicants. Interview Rate 10% Interview Rate from Applications: Positive Indicator: Securing interviews for 10% of the roles that I apply for is a positive indicator, especially considering that not every response will lead to an interview. Industry Variance: Again, this can vary by industry. In highly competitive fields, even securing a single interview can be challenging. Areas for Improvement Targeting: Role Fit: Ensure I am applying for roles that are a strong fit for my skills and experience. This can increase the likelihood of securing more interviews from the responses I receive. Application Materials: Customization: Continue to tailor my CV and cover letters for each application to match the job description and highlight relevant experiences. Networking: Leverage Connections: Networking can help improve these ratios further by getting referrals and insider recommendations, which can lead to higher response and interview rates. Interview Preparation: Preparation: Ensure I have thoroughly prepared for each interview by researching the company, practicing common interview questions, and having questions ready for the interviewer. Conclusion Overall, my ratios indicate that I am on the right track with my job search strategy. I will continue to refine your applications and leverage my network can further improve my chances of securing more interviews and ultimately landing a job. ATTENTION ACTIVELY LOOKING CANDIDATES!! The worst thing you can do is NOT show up for your interview! I can't tell you how painfully bad that crushes your integrity and credibility. If you are working with recruiters, it's important for you to follow up with them, even if you're no longer interested or found something else. Failing to show up to an interview can tarnish several aspects of your professional reputation: Personal Integrity: It reflects poorly on your character and integrity, indicating a lack of commitment, reliability, and respect for others' time. Professionalism: It demonstrates a lack of professionalism and etiquette, which can leave a negative impression on the hiring manager and potentially damage your chances of future opportunities with the company. Relationships: It can strain or damage relationships with the hiring manager, recruiters, and anyone else involved in the interview process, making it challenging to rebuild trust and credibility. Opportunities: Missing an interview means forfeiting the opportunity to showcase your skills, experience, and suitability for the position, potentially hindering your career advancement prospects. Reputation: Word may spread within professional networks or industry circles about your unreliability, negatively impacting your reputation and diminishing your credibility as a candidate. Think about this next time you work with staffing firms and corporate companies.
