The moment of truth always comes when we as museum professionals ask ourselves these questions: do we trust our community? Are we willing to hand over the reins of the museum to them? Will we be able to allow them to lead the day-to-day running of the museum and learn and enjoy the process? The Peale in Baltimore answered yes and acted accordingly by becoming a Community Museum where 90% of its activity is carried out by its community with the timely support of its wonderful staff. Amazing people like Kim Domanski Nancy Proctor Krista D Green whom I had the privilege of meeting yesterday at their presentation at the Museum & Change session organized by avi decter. When you trust in your community and you do it for real (not as "community-washing" to raise funds, fill in statistics that nobody believes, or do marketing campaigns) everything is possible. The Museum becomes a catalyst for the incredible creativity that surrounds it, a facilitator that as Nancy Proctor wisely said every day "opens the door and invites you in". How is this to be achieved? By co-responsibilising the community in every project it undertakes (the museum is not a bank). How does this affect the museum team and its training? The commitment and intention to take every opportunity to "be" community is systematic and pursued intentionally and explicitly. What impact does it have? The Baltimore and digital community knows that every voice will be heard and taken into account at The Peale Every museum should have the opportunity to rediscover the best of itself through its community. And to do so by starting with its first community: the professionals who work in it. It all starts with the key question: do we trust our community? https://www.thepeale.org/

Museums* don't totally need your money, and that's a problem. Museums don't depend solely on earned revenue (aka ticket sales) to pay the bills, which means it's not always easy for museums to know who they serve and which functions to prioritize. For example, for a typical art museum 34% is earned revenue the rest is a mix of endowments, philanthropy and government support. A museum like MoMA has $2B+ in net assets so even at a 7% return they have $140M to play with. This business model isn't bad per se - and it's not Blockbuster :) It does mean that knowing who a museum's primary customers is and what to focus on, is often not so clear cut. Is it the visitor? Is it the mega-donor? Is it education or public engagement or is it scholarship and stewardship? The model works best when these audiences' interests are aligned, but this is not always the case. Thoughts and feedback are welcome. *museums is a VERY broad term, this doesn't apply to science centers or a variety of other museums. Another worthy topic of conversation #museums #museum #experiencedesign

🎨 Mission Statements & Museums: A Deep Dive Into The Orlando Museum of Art's Basquiat Fiasco Institutions like museums don’t just showcase art; they showcase values, culture, and commitments. But what happens when those commitments come under scrutiny? My recent publication, “Mission-Driven Solutions: An Analysis of The Orlando Museum of Art's Mission Statement to Provide Avenues for Navigating the Basquiat Fiasco,” delves into this high-stakes terrain. 👇 The Orlando Museum of Art is an institution that has been no stranger to controversy, with an FBI raid shutting down their Basquiat exhibition in Summer 2022. Initially the OMA took no action in repairing their relationship with the Orlando community and they received backlash from people in Central Florida and beyond. In the past few months, the OMA has started to take real action to repair the damage they have done and, if they truly hold their mission statement at their core, they should be able to move forward from this event as a stronger entity that lifts up the people of Central Florida. Although the OMA’s audience is the “diverse public,” they also center themselves as a community-focused organization. They envision themselves as a “cultural leader” for the residents of Central Florida, with an acknowledgement that they will also serve those who exist beyond those geographic barriers. The OMA demonstrates their inclusivity by writing that they exist to connect “people from all backgrounds and experiences.” This focus on diversity, inclusion and community could help the OMA in repairing the harm they have done, particularly within marginalized demographics. (You can use the link to finish reading the article.) This case study isn't just about one museum. It's about the way organizations can make or break their relationships with communities, especially when they veer off course. If you're looking to navigate the sometimes choppy waters of public sentiment while holding true to your mission statement, take notes. Unlock potential, inspire success. Sometimes, it’s not just about the art on the walls but the integrity of the walls themselves. 🔍 #MissionStatements #MuseumEthics #NeroStrategies #OrlandoMuseumOfArt #BasquiatFiasco #CommunityEngagement #CrisisManagement #StrategicPlanning #OrganizationalValues #PublicRelations #ArtAndCulture #InclusiveProgramming #SocialImpact #DEI #PublicScrutiny #CommunityRelations #ArtWorld #CulturalLeadership #MissionDriven #Accountability #ArtMuseum #EthicalDilemmas #Nonprofits #MakeADifference #UnlockPotential #InspireSuccess #ControversyInArt #StakeholderManagement #ReputationRepair #InstitutionalIntegrity https://lnkd.in/ex5bSZ4E

Yesterday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the US, celebrating the activist’s fight for racial equality in the 1960s. The National Park Service is working on rehabilitating historic buildings at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park. Over the last few months, we have published various tenders for the National Park Service’s project to rehabilitate various historic buildings at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, including his birthplace. Yesterday, we highlighted a sources sought notice for the rehabilitation of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park visitor centre and headquarters building. These initiatives are not just about preserving a site but an effort to keep alive the stories of nonviolent activism and the struggle for civil rights. The National Park Service manages many sites of brutal violence and historic significance to the Civil Rights Movement, including the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument and the Freedom Riders National Monument in Alabama, keeping alive these stories of sacrifice and inspiration. In a parallel development, the Fermanagh & Omagh District Council in Northern Ireland is working to create a Peace Park in Omagh, County Tyrone, the site of the deadliest incident during The Troubles. This incident, a car bombing by an IRA splinter group in 1998, resulted in tragic loss of life and numerous injuries. Now, a proposed Peace Park is envisioned as a space of unity and remembrance, a testament to resilience in the face of violence. Both projects underscore the power of museums and heritage sites as spaces for reckoning with our pasts and healing. They serve as poignant reminders of our collective history, offering insights and tools for fostering dialogue around violent and traumatic histories while giving visitors space for their own experiences. We thought these two initiatives were both unique opportunities for museum and heritage sector professionals to engage in work that is not only about conservation but also about educating, reflecting, and healing. Find out more about these projects at MuseumINSIDER. #MuseumProfessionals #HeritageConservation #CivilRights #PeaceBuilding #Omagh #HistoricalSites #MLK #MartinLutherKingJr

Ten years ago today, I joined 9/11 family members, rescue and recovery workers, and survivors, to dedicate the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Today it stands as a permanent reminder of those killed, and the service, bravery, and compassion of those who stood together in unity during those dark hours. The 9/11 Memorial Museum preserves an essential moment in our history for future generations, ensuring that we will never forget. Join me in visiting the #911Museum, which will now offer free admission to New Yorkers on the first Monday of each month beginning June 3.
