PRIORITIES FOR DECARBONIZATION IN CENTRAL ASIA TO BE DISCUSSED IN ALMATY
As is well known, the Central Asian region, comprising five countries, is facing the adverse effects of climate change: rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, and an increase in extreme weather events.
In this context, from May 27 to 29, 2024, the «Green Academy» Research and Educational Center, in collaboration with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and with the support of the SIPA/OECD project and the University of Central Asia (UCA), will host a session titled "Climate Change and Security: Decarbonization and Adaptation Policies in Central Asia" on the platform of the Central Asia Climate Change Conference (CACCC-2024). The session will discuss innovative approaches to developing a decarbonization strategy for Central Asia, mechanisms for implementing regional cooperation, and the signing of a Memorandum on the establishment of a Regional Climate Hub. The session will be moderated by Dr. Bakhyt Yessekina, a member of the Green Economy Council under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the director of the «Green Academy» REC.

Mansur Oshurbaev, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
Abdukodir Mavlodod, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan;
Lyaziza Sabyrova, Senior Regional Economist at Asian Development Bank;
Dr. Christopher Gerry, Acting Rector of the University of Central Asia;
Urvashi Narain, Program Leader, Sustainable Development Central Asia, World Bank;
Amir Pirich, Acting Director of the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office;
Dr. Johannes Baur, Head of Cooperation, EU Delegation to Kazakhstan;
Patrizia Abrecht, Climate Affairs Adviser at the OSCE Vienna office;
Peline Atamer, SIPA/OECD Project Lead;
Dr. Georgy Safonov, SIPA/OECD Project Coordinator, Senior Researcher at EFI.
This panel session will highlight the importance of cooperation in promoting climate change adaptation and the decarbonization of the Central Asian economy. The session aims to build and strengthen partnerships among organizations involved in decarbonization and climate adaptation initiatives in Central Asian countries. This collaborative approach will help expand local capabilities to a regional level.
Furthermore, the discussion will emphasize how cooperation, research, and advanced technologies can be utilized to enhance the capacity for decarbonization and climate adaptation in the region.
