PRIORITIES FOR DECARBONIZATION IN CENTRAL ASIA TO BE DISCUSSED IN ALMATY As is well known, the Central Asian region, comprising five countries, is facing the adverse effects of climate change: rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, and an increase in extreme weather events. In this context, from May 27 to 29, 2024, the «Green Academy» Research and Educational Center, in collaboration with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and with the support of the SIPA/OECD project and the University of Central Asia (UCA), will host a session titled "Climate Change and Security: Decarbonization and Adaptation Policies in Central Asia" on the platform of the Central Asia Climate Change Conference (CACCC-2024). The session will discuss innovative approaches to developing a decarbonization strategy for Central Asia, mechanisms for implementing regional cooperation, and the signing of a Memorandum on the establishment of a Regional Climate Hub. The session will be moderated by Dr. Bakhyt Yessekina, a member of the Green Economy Council under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the director of the «Green Academy» REC. Zayed Sustainability Prize joined thought leaders from around the world to talk solutions and collaboration during Africa Climate Week 2023. Prize winners shared insights into the challenges and opportunities for extending energy access across Africa, discussed the urgent need to unlock greater climate financing, especially for sustainability-focused SMEs, and highlighted the positive impact of the Prize on communities across the continent. 2024 is a critical year to unlock collective action #ForCoral.    As we step into this new year, full of opportunities, we stop to recognize what's at stake: the health of the ocean.    Since 1950, we have witnessed over half of the world's coral reefs disappear due to anthropogenic impacts, including global warming, pollution, and overfishing. This alarming trend has pushed the entire Earth system of coral reefs to the brink of existence.   Over the past few decades, we must also acknowledge contributions to safeguard coral ecosystems have been insufficient and led by far too few entities. To save reefs and the services they provide, collective action needs to be taken through diverse coalitions, including philanthropies, states, corporations, private investors, organizations, and individuals.   Together we must ensure 2024 holds a turning point where scaled action justifies continued hope.    The road maps are set by the Global Biodiversity Framework and Coral Reef Breakthrough, the financial vehicles are in place, now we need the will of public and private leaders to fund implementation at scale. Although the Breakthrough’s $12 billion USD target by 2030 appears enormous to some; frankly, it’s not. In fact, this financial target to safeguard the future of 50% of remaining coral reef ecosystems equates to just 0.17% of the public and private finance spent every year on investments that fuel climate change. The current paradigm of overexploitation combined with insufficient investment is dire for coral reefs. With the next Ocean Conference now on the horizon, we call for 2024 to mark a year of collective action and mobilization #ForCoral. In just two years, the commercial or early commercialization status of these technologies increased from 52% to 66%, showcasing a shrinking innovation cycle. 3)     Dual Challenge: The narrative presents two fronts - immediate deployment of mature technologies to halve emissions in the next decade, alongside the need for breakthrough innovations to make other climate technologies competitive with fossil fuels. 4)     Unprecedented Capital Deployment: The need for an unprecedented scale and speed of capital deployment in human history is crucial. This marks the largest capital reallocation since the industrial revolution, emphasizing the importance of investment, especially in the Growth Stage, to scale proven technologies. Reflecting on the African Climate Summit: Intent ➡️ Action The Airimpact team just wrapped up an inspiring week at the African Climate Summit in Nairobi, where we engaged with COP28 leadership, partners, and clients. With substantial investment commitments and high-level political ambition, the intent to combat climate change and protect Africa's nature is evident. Now, it's time for action. Africa is central to the climate fight, facing both significant green investment potential and critical deforestation challenges: 🚨 Challenge Ahead: By 2050, Africa's population will grow by 1 billion, necessitating 3 million km2 of new farmland. 🚨 Forests at Risk: Africa boasts 8 million km2 of forests, but uncoordinated expansion threatens up to 40% of these ecosystems. We must act urgently understanding what is critical for success: 🌿 Community Guardians: Local communities near threatened forests hold the key to preservation. Empowering them economically is vital. 🌿 Voluntary Carbon Markets: Despite criticisms, these markets can redirect resources to support African forest protection. We must address VCM markets weaknesses and fix them. 🌿 Investing in Impact: Robust monitoring and payment systems are essential for tangible environmental outcomes and fair community compensation. 🌿 Corporate Responsibility: Companies offsetting their carbon footprint must invest in projects that create real impact. Companies need to take responsibility of the quality of the credits they source. We can provide the tools to help them.
