Tim Chico and I used the Non-adoption, Abandonment, Scale-up, Spread, and Sustainability (or 'NASSS') framework to identify the potential barriers and facilitators for the implementation of 'digital twins' in cardiovascular medicine through a document analysis of policy reports, industry websites, online magazines, and academic publications on digital twins in cardiovascular medicine. Published in Sensors MDPI, our research indicates the importance of building a bridge between the complex technical and social aspects of those seeking to develop, integrate and implement digital twins in cardiovascular medicine. 🌐 On December 21, 2023, in Barcelona, the inauguration of the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center marked the ceremonial launch of the European Comission's initiative "Virtual Human Twin" (https://lnkd.in/etV79HBi). The European initiative for virtual human twins is a key effort by the European Commission to support and accelerate the development of integrated, validated digital representations of the human body. These representations hold significant potential for medical research, healthcare delivery, and enable patient-focused personalized medicine. 🚀 Alfonso Valencia from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center introduced the VHT Manifesto, titled "A Statement of Intent on Development, Evidence, and Adoption in Healthcare Systems." This declaration aims to foster collaboration within the "Virtual Human Twin" ecosystem. Over 75 organizations, including the University of West Bohemia, Pilsen represented by Luděk Hynčík, have already endorsed the manifesto. 🔬 The West Bohemian University in Pilsen, specifically the NTC in collaboration with Fakulta aplikovaných věd ZČU v Plzni , has been dedicated to the virtual twin issue for over 20 years. A virtual human twin in the context of healthcare, biomechanics, and other scientific disciplines is essentially a digital model of a person created based on health data and information. This personalized model reproduces biological, physiological, and anatomical features of a real individual, allowing simulations of various health scenarios and interventions without the need for real human involvement. 💡 The virtual human twin serves various purposes beyond healthcare, such as in diagnosis and treatment, where simulations of treatment procedures and diagnostic tests can be performed using the models. The virtual twin is a significant tool in personalized medicine, leveraging individual health data for specific patient care.
