In 1975, Kodak made a crucial mistake by not heeding Steven Sasson's advice to incorporate digital technology into their cameras. As a result, they should have taken advantage of an excellent opportunity to stay ahead of the game and maintain their dominance in the industry. When other companies started introducing digital cameras, Kodak struggled to catch up, which led to a decline in their market share and eventually forced them to file for bankruptcy in 2012. Growing up in Rochester, NY this post caught my eye. I referenced this story in my book The Customer Mindset, and the catostrophic effect that ignoring your customers and relying on the status quo can have on your business. It represents a break in the value chain bond that exists between the buyer and the seller. What people oftentimes fail to realize is how playing it safe can be the riskiest thing to do. There are so many examples of powerhouse brands that have simply vanished or are now niche players when they once dominated the market - most of them suffered from hubris or flat out denial related to their customers evolution. They just didn’t listen…perhaps because they didn’t ask…perhaps because they did and felt they knew better than the user did. Regardless the outcome was the same, resulting in a much smaller footprint or flat out extinction. Kodak, BlackBerry, Zenith, RCA, Circuit City, Borders, Xerox, Pier 1, Pontiac, Mercury, and the list goes on and on. So how should we think about the value chain bond… Buyer has current need + not-yet-known needs. Seller meeting current needs but not observing or listening to buyers changing needs. Seller sees a competitor developing a different way to solve buyers need. Hubris overtakes sellers mindset and culture, “no way…”, “no one will ever…”, “no one will want…” Seller digs in on status quo. Reaping todays rewards to prop up numbers while ignoring the need to invest in identifying and solving for future needs. Buyer, whether through active research or purely stumbling upon a new way, lose faith in current provider (seller) and switch. This is evidenced in every company listed above and likely dozens more. The value chain is dynamic and must be earned and proven every day. A status quo mindset is likely to become a death sentence for companies that are not open to the possibility that things do change. Their buyers are human, and humans evolve, therefore, their wants and needs evolve.
