Once more into the M&A fray. On Friday, we learned knownwell acquired Alfie Health. The deal means Alfie's personalized treatment platform, ObesityRx, will be integrated into knownwell's primary care and metabolic health offerings. So, why did this one catch my eye? 1. knownwell says this acquisition will deepen its value-based care infrastructure and enhance its clinical decision support capabilities. 2. knownwell also announced two new members of the leadership team worth noting. James Chaukos will serve as its first Chief Operating Officer and John Frager as its Chief Growth Officer. Chaukos formerly served as co-founder, COO, and CFO of Cricket Health (now Interwell Health). Frager previously worked for Carbon Health. -- Thoughts: These comments may sound familiar. A few weeks ago we wrote about the Karoo Health - Heartbeat Health deal, backed by similar rationale in the value-based cardiology space. Turns out tech-enabled care delivery requires [great tech] *and* [great care]. This pattern will continue to play out, and might even find its way into nephrology. On that note, this deal in particular has two kidney connections. First, its ties to metabolic health and obesity, two themes we continue to see coming up in headlines across the kidneyverse (see GLP-1s, vascular access). Second, these additions to the leadership team are a clear sign of what's possible if knownwell has ambitions in kidney care. We know about Interwell's backing and footprint in kidney care. But keep in mind Carbon Health's support from CVS Health Ventures, which has also backed kidney care players like Strive Health and Monogram Health. *** Last week I wrote a piece that asked what potential M&A might look like in value-based kidney care. knownwell, an in-person and virtual, weight-inclusive primary care and metabolic health company, announced a funding raise of $20M, led by industry veterans at Andreesen Horowitz, or a16z Bio + Health. The company is headed by Brooke Boyarsky Pratt who has had lifelong obesity, and Dr. Angela Fitch MD, FACP, FOMA, Dipl. ABOM, President of the Obesity Medicine Association. The approach is to offer weight-inclusive care, in a shame and blame-free care model, within primary care clinics and on a technology platform, incorporating ‘…AI-powered patient stratification, asynchronous communication, and provider workflow enablement tools.’ With over 40% of the U.S adult population and almost 20% of children and adolescents suffering from obesity in the U.S., I am all for compassionate, whole-person care; but how will knownwell measure and drive better clinical outcomes? More #Veterans are turning to natural options for healthcare. 🌿 Research shows that veterans want nonpharmacological, nonaddictive, easy to access options for medicine and healing. But, according to a recent study, veterans are dissatisfied with their providers’ willingness and ability to communicate with them about natural product (NP) options, which may represent a disconnect between the provider and the patient. The study also found that veterans’ perception of provider biases against natural products negatively affected patient-provider relationships between the veterans in the study and their health care providers. However, veterans reported having positive experiences with providers who validated patient experiences, demonstrated knowledge about NPs, and connected them to helpful resources. It's important for veterans to have access to a variety of healthcare options, including natural products. However, it's equally important for providers to be open to discussing these options with their patients. Let's work together to ensure that veterans have access to the best possible care.
