Hope in healthcare can feel nearly magical. The doctor took my hands, knotted from arthritis, looked into my eyes, and spoke to me with commitment. She told me that we would work together to restore my health. She didn’t grandstand, promising a life and a body that was uncertain, she committed that she would do her best. With earnestness in her own eyes, I knew that I could trust her. For the first time in many months, I had hope. In the latest Pulse & Principles post, I talk about hope and agency in health and healthcare, something we are exploring deeply at Obenauer Studiorum with our first research project, Heron.

As the winner of the "Community Partnership Award" for innovative solutions and community health improvements, we'd like to spotlight SuPeR Knee: Development and implementation of an advanced clinical decision-making support tool for the delivery of efficient, personalised rehabilitation for patients undergoing Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA), led by Professor Michael Nilsson. 🧠 Beyond traditional medical parameters, this project delves into the psychosocial factors impacting patient recovery, including anxiety, stress, resilience, pain quality, social support, and sense of purpose. These aspects are vital predictors of TKA outcomes. 🌟 This research is crucial, as it recognises the significance of often-neglected psychosocial elements in patient recovery post-TKA, paving the way for a more holistic approach to rehabilitation. 🧬 So far, the patients of this project have reported a 90% had improvement in physical health quality of life 3 months after their TKA , and 47% had improvement in mental health quality of life 3 months after their TKA. 💡 Anticipated benefits include tailoring rehab programs to individual needs, identifying 'at-risk' patients early, reducing rehabilitation time and costs, and enhancing patient outcomes. Do you work in Life Sciences? I am thrilled to share that I have been invited to speak at this autumn's Westminster Health Forum policy conference on Priorities for Life Sciences. The conference is scheduled to take place online on October 31st, 2023. This event will bring together experts, policymakers, industry representatives, and stakeholders to discuss the future ambitions for the delivery of the Life Sciences Vision and the priorities and challenges for the new Tackling Health Challenges Taskforce. Racism, not race, is the cause of health disparities, but some clinical tools incorporate race as a variable even though it is a social construct. Many clinical professional societies have been reassessing how race is used in risk assessments and treatment decisions and have begun to transition away from including race as if it were a biological trait. A Personal Message: Why I Withdrew from Womenture It is with a heavy heart that I announce my withdrawal from the Womenture event scheduled for this Wednesday, where I was invited to speak as a keynote speaker. At YON E Global, our mission is to revolutionize women’s health through our innovative medical device, focusing specifically on vaginal health. Unfortunately, I was asked to avoid discussing vaginal health at all or even using the word 'vaginal'. The core of my work with YON E Global centers on advancing women’s health, specifically vaginal health. It is the foundation upon which our medical tech startup is built. Being asked to avoid discussing vaginal health, even in a women-focused event, is counterproductive to our mission and values. Part of my talk was to emphasize the importance of understanding and adhering to your personal and company values during negotiations. Our guiding principle at YON E Global is “Values First, Money After.” This situation has tested this core value, and I firmly believe in leading by example. I sincerely apologize to those who signed up and were excited to hear me speak. I share your disappointment, as this decision was not made lightly. It is crucial for events like Womenture to create an environment where women’s health can be discussed openly and without reservation. I believe this is a missed opportunity to truly empower women and make meaningful strides in women’s health advocacy. While I understand Hungary's conservative stance, change begins with challenging the status quo. Avoiding essential topics perpetuates ignorance and hinders progress. Navigating the femtech industry as a female-founded team presents enough challenges. Hearing that there are issues within the women’s space is one thing, but experiencing it firsthand is profoundly disheartening. However, it also strengthens our resolve to continue advocating for open, honest conversations about women’s health. We believe true empowerment comes from addressing these topics head-on, not shying away from them. YON E Global will continue to uphold our values, no matter the obstacles. Last night, I attended the EndoRISE Kick-Off Event, a community initiative to advance Endometriosis Research, Innovation, Support, and Education. During the event, we learned more about the organization's goals, which include creating the first-ever Biorepository for Endometriosis in the USA. This biorepository will serve as a resource for public health and educate the public, schools, and doctors. The keynote speaker, Dr. Karen Tang, delivered an impactful speech. My key takeaway from her talk was, "Common is not normal; you don’t have to keep suffering." I was thrilled to win a signed copy of her book, which I am excited to dive into and bring to my book club as a conversation piece. We also had more conversations with community members, and I particularly loved the breakout groups. As an endometriosis advocate, I got to voice the areas of focus I’d like the organization to prioritize next. I appreciate that they are reaching out to patients for input on the changes we want to see. There were many great ideas about communication and marketing to raise endometriosis awareness.
