Over the last month, my husband and I did our (delayed) spring cleanup in our yard which included pulling countless weeds. For those that like working outside, you understand the joy of pulling a weed and getting it root and all (so satisfying!) This idea of "root and all" is also relevant for us at work. When we're problem solving, we need to slow down and stop looking only for the quick fix. Instead, we need to identify the root of the problem. If we don't take time to discover where the problem is coming from, we're going to "solve" the same problem repeatedly. Delegation is an interesting skill because we expect leaders to be good at it, yet we rarely teach it. One mindset shift has helped me immensely- as someone that likes to remain in control, letting go is NOT easy! Instead of viewing the action as delegation (I'm losing something), I view it as development for my team member (their growth). Instead of losing, our team is gaining new skills and momentum. In the last 6 months, I’ve had several friends impacted by company downsizing. This is a scary, difficult and frustrating time, and I in no way want to minimize their experience as it is a vulnerable place to be. With that said, this article takes an interesting look at company layoffs from a different angle- the impact to those still in the organization. Increased workloads, fear of losing their job and not understanding if there is future growth for their career are several key reasons engagement decreases after companies go through a layoff. Earlier this week I went to the dentist. As soon as I sat down in the chair, the hygienist said "Ma'am, I don't want to make you uncomfortable, but your shirt is on inside out." My response? "THANK YOU for telling me! At least I haven't been to the office yet, today!" While this is a funny example, it reminded me of the value feedback has at work and in our lives. Without it, we can't recognize our blind spots, what we do well and where we need to improve. Whether it be someone pointing out spinach in your teeth or a way to improve your approach on a project, remember to view feedback as an opportunity to get better. It's not always easy to digest, but it's worth it. #feedback #leadershipdevelopment

Last night our church had a volunteer celebration, and they talked about the ripple effect our actions have on other people and our community. It left me thinking... what ripple effect do I have on others at work? When frustration boils over, the ripple effect is negative. When innovation is felt by others, the ripple effect is new ideas and process improvement. When a successful project is recognized, the ripple effect is motivating.
