Yesterday, I had the good fortune to hear Casey Perley speak at the Stanford Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation. For those that missed it, here's what you can learn from Casey and her team at Army Applications Laboratory. - De-scope to increase impact - Be problem centric - Align incentives 1. De-scope to increase impact. Along the way, AAL realized that to make a bigger impact, they should focus only on non-traditional companies and their ability to solve hard, Army problems. This is a great example of legacy building versus empire building. The former leads to different results, which is what the Nation needs and AAL is pursuing. 2. Be problem-centric. AAL works hard to describe the problem to be solved, but doesn't over-engineer it by creating a laundry list of requirements or feature requests that constrain innovation. Giving entrepreneurs the space to build is critical. 3. Understand and align incentives. This is often overlooked by government leaders. Commercial ones, too. It's hard, but it's critical to transition new ideas and things to the next stage of momentum, especially inside government. It's a mission accelerant, and other innovation organizations would be wise to follow AAL's example. Thank you to Casey Perley for visiting us in Silicon Valley and showing the next generation of entrepreneurs (Hacking for Defense® (H4D) students) what right looks like in government innovation. Thank you to Joe Felter Eric Volmar for pulling this together.

Part of the diversity, equity and inclusion policies must also include people over 50 years of age and women,... groups that are often invisible due to unfounded biases. In the attached post of Forbes you will see examples of the value they can provide. Be yourself and age and gender will not be a limiting factor anymore. #diversity #inclusion #beyou
#ForbesOver50: Age can be your superpower. Just ask any of the entrepreneurs, investors, inventors and artists on our third annual 50 Over 50 list. Some, like Patti LaBelle or Caryn Seidman-Becker, are self-made founders of brands used by millions; others, like astronaut Peggy Whitson, are breaking records while forging scientific discoveries; still others, like library leader Tracie D. Hall, are fighting to protect our basic rights. All of them—200 in total, spread across four categories—are changing the world. READ MORE: https://trib.al/9wRvm14
