let's dive deeper into each component of a starter: 1. Ignition Switch: This is typically located on the steering column or dashboard. When you turn the key or push the start button, it sends an electrical signal to the starter solenoid to activate the starter motor. 2. Battery: The car's battery provides the electrical power needed to start the engine. It sends a large electrical current to the starter motor to turn the engine over. 3. Starter Motor: The starter motor is an electric motor that is connected to the car's engine. When activated, it spins a gear (called a starter drive or Bendix gear) that engages with the engine's flywheel or flexplate. This action turns the engine over, initiating the combustion process. 4. Starter Solenoid: This is a relay located between the battery and the starter motor. When the ignition switch is turned to the start position, the solenoid receives an electrical signal, causing it to close a pair of heavy contacts that allows the large electric current from the battery to flow to the starter motor. 5. Flywheel or Flexplate: The flywheel (for manual transmissions) or flexplate (for automatic transmissions) is a large, heavy wheel connected to the engine's crankshaft. It serves as a mechanical connection point for the starter motor to turn the engine over. When you turn the ignition key, the ignition switch sends a signal to the starter solenoid, which then allows electrical current from the battery to flow to the starter motor. The starter motor engages with the flywheel or flexplate, turning the engine over and initiating the combustion process. Once the engine is running, the starter motor disengages automatically, usually by a mechanism that disengages the starter drive gear from the flywheel.

This is the mental matrix I picture when assessing a potential automation project for a client. HV+LD or HV+HD are most likely to produce the highest return on investment. LV+LD or LV+HD are most likely not to. This isn't to say that projects falling into the former category are a complete non starter. It just means that if done in isolation the ROI timeline will be more extensive. Packaging them up as part of a wider project is usually the best course of action.

When is good, good enough? As an engineer myself, this flow chart has been a long standing joke, where a short cut is almost cheating when there is a super complicated solution to be had, and a root cause to be found and fixed. Band aid solutions as we call them in the work, context are all things that we never fix in a proper way. However, the Band-Aid itself does serve the purpose of simply protecting something long enough that it can heal on its own and go away. So sometimes we just need something that’s fit for purpose, fit for now, and keeps us, literally, moving. Learning to spot the difference could make your life or just your day, a whole lot easier. Why not resist complexity, and see beauty in simplicity? #Simplicity #Ideas #Engineer #ThinkDifferently
