Acting President and Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Marquette University

Dear Marquette community, The last two weeks have been unimaginably difficult. We lost our president and friend; the grief we are experiencing is deep, and it will take time to heal. I ask that you join me in continuing to pray for President Lovell’s wife, Amy, and his children, Marissa, Matt, Anna and Kevin, that they may feel loved and supported by us all. Healing begins with each of us as individuals, in different ways and on different schedules. I am proud of the support I have seen our community members give to one another, and I ask that you continue to give yourselves and one another grace in the days ahead. We will get through this together. It is said at Marquette that we are at our best when faced with adversity. Our community of students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends has proved time and again its ability to lift up and take care of one another — and we are fortunate to have our Catholic, Jesuit mission to guide us, as it always has and will. I hope you have read some of the tributes to President Lovell that people have shared. In my own grief, I have found comfort in reading others’ reflections about the effect he had on their lives, especially the importance of his faith. In longstanding friendships, brief encounters, close collaborations and his good work in the community, President Lovell demonstrated a true gift for connecting with people, and he left a lasting imprint on our lives and university. During this time of transition and uncertainty, I understand the need to know what’s next. I ask for your patience as we work through the many questions for which we do not yet have answers. The Board of Trustees will be leading the search for Marquette’s next president, and I expect that they will have information to share soon. President Lovell was a great leader and an even better person and friend. Our Marquette community is a strong one, and I know we will do the work our mission calls us to do and make him proud. Thank you for all that you are doing for our Marquette community. I appreciate your leadership, friendship, compassion and support. Sincerely, Dr. Kimo Ah Yun Acting President Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

I, too, am a proud alum. Mr. Lovell was inspirational. He left us hungry for more inspiration. I hope and pray that MU will feed that hunger by taking the necessary time to find a new leader who beams energy, faith and imagination to propel Marquette to thrive on. I trust that with time, we will recover even stronger. Best hopes and prayers.
