𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘀 Until 1954, when Roger Bannister became the first man to run a mile in under four minutes, most track and field experts and medical professionals thought the four-minute barrier was impossible to break. They were convinced the human body couldn’t physically run at such a pace; they were certain that anyone attempting to run this fast would collapse under the extreme physical exertion and psychological pressure. Roger Bannister proved them wrong and set the stage for many others who also were able to “achieve (and surpass) the impossible.” 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐚 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝-𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐮𝐧: • 46 days later, Australian Jim Landry ran the mile in 3:58 • Weeks after that, Bannister and Landry broke 4 minutes in the same race • 30 years later, the world record has been broken 16 times • Current record: 3:43 by Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj • Tens of thousands of runners have now broken 4-minute mark • In 1997, Kenya’s Daniel Komen ran TWO miles in less than 8 minutes! 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧: The very best leaders don’t blindly accept the limitations and “can’t be done” mindsets and taboos that may be associated with their industries, professions, companies, and peer groups. The people who I consider contributed to and helped to shape my career in FMCG/CPG……. starting way back in 1985 – I have also been fortunate enough to work with many really good people. David Yiend (passion), Chris Rackham(positioning), Peter Thornton(again/opportunity), Jenni Danby (diplomacy), Ian Plumbley (never give up), Jon Hayman (Questions), Steve Horton (be nice), Matt Riley(network), Dan Arnsperger (Network 2) After 2017. Mark Haynes (Opportunity), John Shropshire(promises), Matt Riley (Network 3), David Milner (network 4), Paul Baker & Jeremy Gilboy (entrusting/vision/fun), and of course Sally for the support that is required to run at the pace I have been doing. Now I have stepped back from Executive roles. We should also perhaps look at ourselves as contributing massively to our own careers having taken the opportunities presented and run with them, exceeding expectations, and often sacrificing regular life to create success, of course there are lots of failures that come in-between. Believe in fate, step forward and let fate see you.

Some of the best advice I received early in my career was “choose your boss, not your job.” The most impactful leaders I have worked for had three clear visions: 1. A vision for the leader they want to be. This is where you ask yourself questions like “how do I manage up and down stream,” “what boundaries do I set to make sure I conduct ethical business,” and “how do I maintain accountability on my team while ensuring I give trust and autonomy to the talent I’ve hired?” This vision should be ever-evolving and top-of-mind in all your leadership decisions. 2. A vision for the overall success of their team/region. Too many managers think this is the only vision required, and as a result, don’t even execute on it well. This vision thrives when you create a team with diversity of perspective, safe space to be challenged and honest culture about your growth, productivity and investment needs. Approach this vision with honesty and your P&L will thank you. 3. A vision for the goals and career progression of (and made in collaboration with) each individual on the team. Doesn’t matter if they’re a fresh hire out of college, a 30-year sales pro, or someone pivoting to a new career in their journey…every person on your team deserves a vested interest from you as a leader, and discussions around skill-building, work-life balance, and aspirations for the future need to be a focal point of all your engagements with your teams. If you’re trading time, you’d better believe in what you’re doing… Yesterday evening I was sat at the airport waiting to board a flight out to Malta to catch up with the Mdina Partners team for a brilliant week of training, client work, planning and team bonding. I’d usually be wrapping up the weekend with the family, playing games with my boys and burning off the last of their energy before trying to get them to bed on time before school today. That time is everything to me. So as I’ve dialled in my personal and professional priorities, I’ve committed to doing everything I can to protect it. It means that when I trade, I have to be as sure as I can that it aligns with my values and aspirations. On average, adding not taking away. Luckily this week more than ticks the boxes. I’ll miss the family, but I’m grounded in my feeling of why. It’s not a perfect science, and it doesn’t always feel like life affords the flexibility. But try keeping this thought top of mind when you feel yourself being pulled in multiple direction. Sometimes it’s alright to say no. The world won’t stop, and you’ll keep yourself in the game. #coaching #leadership #priorities

This month we say goodbye to Don Evans. Don had been Chair of Your Own Place CIC Non-Executive Directors since 2020 and his term has come to an end. Not for one moment do I doubt the challenges of chairing a small dynamic and ambitious CIC. To say nothing of the challenges of managing me! 😂 All the good things Don has been to Your Own Place and me that I believe a Chair should be: 🙏 Unequivocal in his backing of me and what I’m doing, in trying to lead Your Own Place. 🙏 Available. I may not be very good at reaching out and asking for help, but without doubt, I knew Don was there. 🙏 Challenging. In the right way. Don would challenge some pretty personally held beliefs. It’s vital that someone challenges these that you respect and know that ultimately, whether you agree of not, respects you. 🙏 Thoughtful. Don was reflective and kind when needed. 🙏 Reliable. Pretty much every fortnight for the last two years we’ve met for coffee. An invaluable space for me to breathe, talk openly and strategically in the way that you only can with someone consistently on the journey with you. Thanks Don. A Journey to Success with Lysander Gloria Attending Sir Sandy's presentation was truly an inspiring experience. He shared his success story in a way that resonated deeply with me, highlighting three key points that made a lasting impression. Firstly, Sir Sandy emphasized the importance of honoring one’s roots. He began his presentation by expressing deep gratitude for his parents, who had instilled in him the values that shaped his character and career. This heartfelt acknowledgment was a poignant reminder that our successes are often built on the foundational lessons from those who raised us, making it a touching tribute to his parents. Secondly, he showcased his team's contribution to his achievements. By displaying photos of his colleagues and expressing heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering support, Sir Sandy highlighted the crucial role of teamwork in personal and professional success. His recognition of their efforts not only underscored his leadership qualities but also his genuine appreciation for those who have supported him throughout his journey. Lastly, Sir Sandy advised us to be strategic and intentional in our decisions, stating, "Be a man with a plan, and the choices you make will determine the course of your future." This piece of wisdom served as a powerful reminder that our choices have significant impacts and that thoughtful planning can lead to successful outcomes. Although the session was held virtually from Davao, Sir Sandy’s ability to connect and inspire was unmistakable. Each point he made was delivered with clarity and passion, leaving a profound impact on everyone in the audience.
