A while back me, Alisa Lepik and Virge Prank-Vijard had the opportunity to represent Estonian Aviation Academy and attend ICAO seminar on Green Airports at Athens, Greece. Key points to we’d like to share with you: 1. Michelle Samson from Rotterdam The Hague Airport highlighted that “sustainability is not only a licence to grow, but a licence to exist”. It is for a reason that sustainability has become the hottest topic. 2. There are already single use plastic free airports- several in India. SFO also has a plastic free policy- everything is packaged in recyclable material. Additionally this promotes new ways of thinking and makes way for new out-of-the box ideas- for example Schipol airport recycles its own waste to make new roads (aka as paving material). 3. Emphasis is on co-operation- partnership is the new leadership! P.S Had the pleasure meeting the host- Deniz Kaymak. Those 2 days were full of valuable ideas and inspiration for a sustainable future! ✈️🌍🌱 #sustainability #aviation #greenairports

Not just another day in the office! Not only was it a Sunday evening, it was also my fist visit to a tanker vessel. And not just with any cargo: the ship discharged 10 million litres of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (i.e. fuel of non-fossile origin made from organic waste products such as used cooking oil) mixed with conventional jet fuel. The fuel was received at Prøvestenen in Copenhagen, ready to be supplied to airlines at Copenhagen Airport. This is a first for Copenhagen at this scale and a small but significant step towards decarbonizing the aviation industry. EU requirements on non-fossile components in jet fuel kicks in from 2025, so great to see some airlines being ahead the game by demanding the fuel now. This is also a great example of the port and its clients adapting to the demands of society - in this case using existing unique and strategically located infrastructure to support decarbonizing a sector that is not easily electrified. Is this enough? Certainly not! We need to rethink our lifestyles, consume less and push for regulation, but when we consume - and travel - we need greener alternatives at scale. Asia-Pacific airlines, including SIA, aim for cleaner jet fuel to form 5% of consumption by 2030 Summary: Leaders of the 14 airlines that form the Association of Asia-Pacific Airlines (AAPA), including Singapore Airlines (SIA), have collectively set an "aspirational" target of achieving 5% sustainable aviation fuel use by 2030. This initiative, announced by AAPA director-general Subhas Menon, indicates a varied commitment among member airlines, with some possibly using a higher mix of sustainable jet fuel than others. Cathay Pacific, an AAPA member, has independently set a target for sustainable jet fuel to account for 10% of its fuel consumption by 2030. SIA, while supportive, has not yet made a firm decision on facilitating the supply of sustainable fuel. The carrier, along with its budget arm Scoot, has completed a 20-month trial demonstrating Singapore's operational readiness for the switch to sustainable fuels. Globally, the supply of sustainable aviation fuel is currently less than 1% of demand. AAPA's 5% target is a move to stimulate production by signaling demand to oil majors. This target is comparable to Europe's goal of ensuring 6% of jet fuel at European airports is sustainable by 2050, and Japan's aim for airlines to replace 10% of fuel used at Japanese airports with eco-friendly alternatives by 2030. Singapore’s Acting Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat highlighted the need to balance environmental sustainability with the cost impact on the aviation industry. Singapore's approach may include mandatory use of greener fuels for flights departing from the city-state, incentives for using such fuels, or a combination of both. The final strategy, part of Singapore’s Sustainable Air Hub Blueprint, is expected in the first half of 2024. Chee emphasized that sustainable aviation fuel is critical for environmental sustainability in the industry, despite its current scarcity. He also stressed the importance of scientific certification for the raw materials of green fuels and called for continued investment in research and development for alternative production methods, like algae-based fuels. Airlines are also exploring other sustainability measures. Cathay Pacific is focusing on reducing single-use plastics, while Thai Airways is introducing crew attire made largely from recycled plastic and biodegradable items in amenity kits. Air India's chief executive, Campbell Wilson, noted that sustainability is not the highest priority for all customers, reflecting different stages of development and affordability across countries. #AAPA #SustainableAviationFuel #EnvironmentalSustainability #AirlineIndustry #SingaporeAirlines #CathayPacific #GreenEnergy #AviationSector #CarbonEmissions #EcoFriendlyFuel #SustainableDevelopment #AsiaPacificAirlines

The global economy relies on air cargo, but its relentless growth comes at a steep price. The environmental cost is rising, making sustainable practices no longer a luxury, but an essential requirement. "Sustainability is a key focus at Menzies. For cargo, this means considering solar power for warehouses, aiming for 80 to 90% electricity from rooftop panels. In Bangalore, we've installed a wastewater treatment plant for water reuse. Rainwater harvesting in our new warehouse ensures self-sufficiency. Inside, electric forklifts reduce our carbon footprint, and digital platforms minimise paper usage. Our dedication to environmental protection remains unwavering" Charles Wyley, EVP- Middle East, Asia, Africa, Menzies Aviation during an exclusive conversation at air cargo India 2024. Global freight airline Atlas Air has commenced using a 5% blend of sustainable aviation fuel on flights from #Zaragoza Airport in north-east Spain, more than double the 2% volume mandated from 2025 under Europe’s #ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, reports Tony Harrington for #GreenAir. The SAF is provided by Spanish refiner Repsol for Atlas Air flights operated on behalf of the global fashion company Inditex, which owns apparel brands including Zara, Massimo Dutti, Pull&Bear and Bershka. Repsol already supplies SAF to airlines including IAG’s Spanish-based carriers Iberia and Vueling Airlines, and the European low-cost operator Ryanair, but New York-based Atlas Air is the first all-freight operator to use SAF regularly on flights in Spain. The Repsol deal to fuel the Atlas-Inditex flights also progresses the efforts of the airline’s parent, Atlas Air Worldwide, to achieve a targeted 20% reduction in its Scope 1 carbon emissions by 2035. #sustainableaviation #sustainableaviationfuel Mark Pilling Oliver Fernández ✈ Michael Steen Daniel Abaroa Celine Hourcade The International Air Cargo Association TIACA https://lnkd.in/g8hRPnNw

Lufthansa Cargo and Best Services International Freight join forces to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel 🌱 Together with Best Services International Freight (BSI), we have agreed to reduce the Chinese logistics company's CO2 emissions associated with airfreight. BSI will invest in a total of around 137,000 liters of #SustainableAviationFuel (SAF) at #LufthansaCargo to offset the CO2 emissions caused by its flights. We signed the agreement on June 26 at this year's #TransportLogisticChina in Shanghai. "Best Services International Freight is our first customer in China to opt for the use of more than 100 tons of #SAF," said J. FLORIAN PFAFF, Head of Region Asia Pacific. "Examples like this help reduce our CO2 emissions and promote the use of SAF worldwide. Every customer who takes advantage of this opportunity is making a significant contribution to the decarbonization of logistics. The interest shows us that there is great potential for this, especially in Asia." "The cooperation with Lufthansa Cargo strengthens our partnership. As China's leading air cargo logistics company and an industry leader in the digitalization process, we combine progress with responsibility," said Dr. Wilson Wong Group CEO of BSI. "With limited SAF production globally, agreements like this are of paramount importance." SAF is a critical technology key to more sustainable flying and essential to the energy transition in aviation. Over its entire lifecycle, biogenic SAF has a CO2 footprint that is approximately 80% lower than that of conventional kerosene. SAF can be used in regular flight operations without any infrastructure adjustments. The SAF used by us is produced using the HEFA process, for example from used cooking oils. As only forestry, agricultural or catering waste is used, there is no conflict with food production. We offer SAF via the Lufthansa Group from the world's leading manufacturers. Since September 2021, all our customers have been able to have their freight transported more sustainably by opting for the "Sustainable Choice" add-on service. The Lufthansa Group and its companies are actively involved in the research and development of the next generation of sustainable aviation fuels. In numerous projects worldwide, the Lufthansa Group is currently working with partners from science and industry - from start-ups to established energy companies - on more SAF. We are pursuing a clear strategy for a more sustainable future and, together with the Lufthansa Group, have set ourselves ambitious climate protection targets: The Lufthansa Group aims to achieve a neutral CO2 balance by 2050 and to halve net CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2019 through reduction and compensation measures. In addition to SAF, more sustainable aviation also requires major efforts for a modern fleet and efficiency improvements in flight operations. Only in this combination can the change be successful in the long term. #EnablingGlobalBusiness #TogetherForSustainability
