The Sunday Times Rich List = fundraisers fools gold. There’s no magic wand or list for major donor fundraising 😲 But there are some proven things that do work… → Shared Values Over Wealth: Align with donors who share your vision. → Connections count: Foster relationships rather than casting a wide net. → Quality Over Quantity: Dedicated supporters drive more impact than occasional big cheques. Successful major gifts will come from prioritising passionate supporters over chasing big names. Remember ... "All that glitters is not gold" ✨ #DonorEngagement #MajorDonors #Philanthropy #SundayTimesRichList2024 #Fundraising

GivingUSA’s Annual Charitable Giving Report for 2023 was just released (givingusa.org). It covers all charitable giving in the United States—to schools, foundations, relief organizations, and more. I’ll spend a while digesting the data, but some things immediately jump out to me about giving to religious organizations: - In 2023, Religious organizations received 24% of charitable donations—a bigger share than any other group. They beat the second-place organization by 10% (Human Services had 14%). BUT: In 1984, almost 60% of all charitable donations were made to religious organizations and just 10 years ago 32% of all charitable contributions went to religious organizations. - In 2023 giving as a share of personal income in the United States was at 1.9%, which is in line with giving by Americans over the last 40 years. BUT, that giving is spread out over more organizations than ever before. Consider: in 2012 there were 1,081,000 registered non-profits; in 2022 there were 1,480,000—an increase of almost 50%. - In real dollars, giving to religious organizations increased to $145 billion last year. BUT, in inflation-adjusted dollars that giving is DOWN 4.17% since 2021 and is in line with the inflation-adjusted amount given to religious organizations in 2013. If your church has been feeling the pinch, then you're not alone. One of the conversations we're having with churches and church leaders is how to live faithfully in this moment when the cultivation of generosity and how we steward the gifts of others is more critical than ever. What do you make of the data? What do you see and hear?

It’s officially that time of the year, year end!! When you read this, you might think I’m crazy, but I’m not… At least on this subject! At the National Christian Foundation we begin regularly talking about year end in August. Our team has put together a great article about some things to prepare for that important date, 12/31. Consider even one of these steps over the next few weeks and months.

Purposeful is always a great adjective to describe financial planning. Whether thinking of annual giving well ahead of year-end or creating a very intentional estate plan, do it with purpose in mind.

The Lake Institute on Faith & Giving and Givelify released their 2024 report: "Giving in Faith." Good insights here, including a couple that stood out to me: "The most recent Giving USA report for the year 2022 showed that total giving in the United States declined 3.4% from 2021 (10.5% when adjusted for inflation), suggesting that Americans are becoming less generous in giving to charitable organizations... [but] American faith-based givers in this study have been remarkably philanthropic, even more so than the average American. Just over 97% of faith-based givers surveyed reported giving money, time, and/or items in 2023. By contrast, in 2022, GivingTuesday found that 75% of all Americans surveyed had given either money, time, items, or advocacy." "Predominantly Black congregations were significantly more likely to consider their local community needs a very important factor (71%) in outreach decisions than predominantly white congregations (58%)." "People of faith aspire to be even more generous this year. Faith-based givers (98%) report they want to give the same or more money to at least one cause or organization in 2024."

Against a cloud of uncertainty, our focus in life is what gives or deprives us peace. Only when we embrace the reality that we are but sojourners through this world - marching on to a place of promise and hope – that life takes on a richer meaning. We become willing to step into brokenness with the motive of bringing hope and healing. Thereafter, using our finances to multiply our impact becomes exciting and empowering. Here are four worldviews that explain people’s motivation to give. • Prosperity Worldview – You give to get. It is rooted in the expectation that you will be blessed when you give. A karmic slant dominates this worldview. • Poverty Worldview – You give out of fear of judgment. It tends to be calculative and legalistic. • Philanthropy Worldview – You give out of obligation to give back to society. It is often motivated by social and tax rewards. • Stewardship Worldview – You give to be a blessing. It is characterized by delight that stems from transformative faith and generosity. Charles Feeney died on Monday, October 9th, 2023. His isn’t a name we recognize, but I think you’ll find his worldview encouraging. Here’s a NY Times link that tells his story. https://lnkd.in/gNv3tFGf.
