Toronto Western Hospital 24/06/24 Dear Reader, I am writing this at the last minute, between procedures, to meet my publisher’s deadline. We launched “The Essence of Invention, the Joy of medical creativity” last Friday evening June 21st at the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto. David Goldbloom was magnificent as an interviewer. I carried the idea for a book on medical inventorship around in my head for years. I assembled and disassembled it as a thought experiment just as I do my spine devices. I read extensively about all types of creativity, from Lady Gaga to Lucien Freud, to Colin Chapman. It all comes from the same place, intrinsic talent. That rare earth element that powers the world. Then Tessa, our beautiful 11 year old Golden Retriever died and we got Alfie, another Golden. Even as a puppy Alfie had opinions. He likes to be fed at about 6 am every morning but day light savings confuses him. He stands on your chest until you get up. A 90 lb retriever is persuasive. Suddenly I had an extra hour a day, so I wrote this book. A golden hour, with a fresh mind, not adulterated by the noise of life. Churchill once said that a colleague had nothing worth saying but was determined to say it. I hope it’s not the case here. All sentences, stories, or books need a resolution. When I got to the last chapters I didn’t know how to make all the stories symmetrical and resolve them. Then, while walking Alfie in a minus 7 snow storm one evening, I saw it. It surprised me, but made sense. I hope you think so too. Thank you for the privilege of allowing me share these thoughts with you. I am very respectful of your time. The book is available here. https://lnkd.in/gkfRb-8R It is meant to be written on, dog eared, coffee stained, and scrunched in a back pack. In tearing haste Kieran
Congratulations, Dr. Kieran Murphy! It's a treat to read about innovation through the lens of one of Canada's great medical innovators. I'm savouring your insights about the value of partnership and culture while despairing at the dismal statistics that keep women down and out of medical innovation. Thanks for all you do to improve medicine, your patients' lives, and Canada.
Placed my book 📕 order via Amazon and delivery is scheduled for July. I can’t wait to read it. Congratulations Kieran
