The first time I learned about leadership was the time I have coached a child soccer team. I learned how to be a leader and from other coaches I learned how leadership doesn’t work. Motivating players is just the same as motivating employees. Empowering them to take action and become leaders within the team was something I loved to do from the first second. I had coaches, that did the opposite to me and my team members and for one season I had a coach like this in my staff too. This was horrible for the team and for me. The same players, that failed to perform under his ruling suddenly performed a lot better and thrived after he was gone.
My approach has always been leading them to become leaders on their own and teach them everything I know. Of course there were some players, that didn’t have much talent, but I kept motivating them and used their mistakes to teach them how to do it better. As a team, we won a championship and all players in the team have scored at least one goal.
The same approach I used in my first business. Before I took over it was very traditional and the performance was obviously limited. While learning the business management from my mentor I could freely implement the leadership approach and the result was simply great! Employee happiness rating went from 4 to 10 within a few months and this had a huge impact on productivity too.
The same I’m trying to achieve as a consultant and so far it went pretty well I would say.
The best example of a leader? Xabi Alonso. What he gets out of his team by his leadership is beyond impressive!
