Thank you to the Berghof Foundation for an excellent webinar on 'Human Rights in Mediation' - and the launch of the fascinating book of the same name, by Katarina Mansson, which can be accessed for free at the link below. The research by the author identified seven core answers to the question of how to better integrate human rights in mediation: (i) Appealing to the self-interest of the parties; (ii) Incentivizing by communicating human rights humbly but firmly; (iii) Defusing tension in the mediation process; (iv) Sequencing with pragmatism; (v) Approaching human rights holistically, with increased attention to economic, social and cultural rights; (vi) Placing victims at the heart; and (vii) Benefitting from human rights expertise and networks. Peace and conflict are co-relational…. Although conflict can disrupt peace, but it can also be a catalyst for positive change and also deepen peace. The concept of peace amongst other things emphasizes the importance of dialogue, empathy, and the capacity for negotiation and compromise. Peace is achievable not by avoiding conflicts but by facing them constructively with the aim of reaching understanding, mutual respect, and cooperation. Mediation which is a peaceful means of dispute resolution is one of the alternatives that can be explored when there is a conflict. Choose Mediation, choose peace…. António Guterres, In 1948, the #UN's legitimization of a #racist #settler #colonial #project "#israel” against the well of the #indigenous #people of #Palestine, was a clear violation of UN own Charter, denying them their fundamental right of self-determination. In the same year, the UN adopted the #Universal #Declaration of #Human #Rights, almost every article in the declaration has been persistently and systematically violated by the #racist #settler #colonial #apartheid "israel" from that date till today. In 1974, the #UN General Assembly suspended apartheid South Africa's membership, followed by broader trade and economic sanctions. South Africa's readmission in 1994 came after dismantling apartheid & transitioning to democracy. The ongoing #Genocide in #Gaza is a horrific stain on the world's conscience, it’s a result of #UN violating its own charter and Universal declaration of Human rights 76 years ago. 💞 How to prove your common-law relationship 💞  How do you prove a common-law relationship? According to the IRPR (Immigration & Refugee Protection Regulations) a common-law couple are one who have: Lived together, or cohabited, for at least one year with both partners being 18 years or older (although they can begin co-habiting at an earlier age, the relationship is only considered common-law after both have turned 18 and have then lived together for at least 1 year as 18-year-olds) Done so in a conjugal relationship. This means that a common-law relationship is what is called a de facto relationship as compared to a marriage which is a de jure (or legal) relationship. Because it is a de facto rather than a legal relationship, the onus is on the applicant to prove that their common-law relationship is a valid one.
