Raytheon has been awarded a $20 million contract to develop an advanced multi-chip package for use in airborne, maritime and ground sensors, its parent company RTX said on Feb. 1. The contract was awarded through the Strategic and Spectrum Missions Advanced Resilient Trusted Systems (S2MARTS) consortium, a Pentagon acquisition vehicle for the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS), trusted microelectronics, and strategic missions hardware environments. Per the contract, Raytheon will collaborate with partners like California-based Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to compactly package state-of-the-art commercial devices that will convert radio frequency energy to high-bandwidth digital information. The multi-chip package will feature “industry-standard die-level interconnect ability,” RTX said in a news release. Die-to-die interfaces facilitate seamless data transfer between silicon dies within a single package. Compared to traditional chip-to-chip interfaces, they benefit from greater power efficiency and bandwidth. In recent months, Raytheon has been accelerating its work on advanced microelectronics in line with a broader effort to strengthen the defense industrial base. In November 2023, the company was awarded a four-year, $15 million contract from DARPA to boost the electronic capability of radio frequency sensors with high-power-density gallium nitride transistors. #raytheon #rtx #aerospace #defense #semiconductor #supplychain #military #nationalsecurity #silicon #rareearth #galliumnitride #industrialpolicy https://lnkd.in/ecSYhtEA

I recently wrote for Aviation Week Network about some important changes at Mercury Systems and how competition is intensifying among different suppliers of microelectronics to the A&D sector. Excerpts below: Mercury Systems (MRCY), a technology provider to the aerospace and defense industry, announced on Jan. 17 that it would consolidate its Mission Systems and Microelectronics divisions to create a unified structure with multiple business units and supporting functions. Per this change, the company named Roger Wells chief operating officer, effective Jan. 22, reporting to Mercury chairman and CEO Bill Ballhaus. Wells joined MRCY in 2021 as executive vice president and president of Microelectronics, having previously served as vice president and general manager of Unmanned & Integrated Solutions at Teledyne FLIR. In the long term, one of MRCY’s historic competitive strengths could be eroded due to rising competition in the military semiconductor market as the U.S. accelerates onshore chipmaking efforts, Jefferies said. While MRCY has historically been a top outsourced provider of chips to defense primes, it was BAE Systems that received $35 million from the Pentagon in December under the CHIPS and Science Act. The funding will be used to upgrade BAE’s Microelectronics Center (MEC) in Nashua, New Hampshire, which will include the acquisition of new manufacturing tools that can help to boost production capacity and reduce time-to-build product. Given that the CHIPS Act allocates $52.7 billion for domestic chipmaking, there is a lot more where that came from. Intel reportedly is the leading candidate to receive funding. In December, the technology giant formed a partnership with the state of Ohio known as the Silicon Heartland Supplier Consortium, which aims for the Buckeye State to become one of two semiconductor clusters that the federal government wants to create with CHIPS Act funding. To that end, Intel plans to spend $20 billion to build two leading-edge semiconductor fabrication facilities in Licking County, Ohio. #aerospace #defense #supplychain #military #nationalsecurity #semiconductor #technology #intel #microelectronics #baesystems #ohio #chipsact https://lnkd.in/eCamyvi6
