The people in the retail sector deserve a lot of respect. It is a relentlessly demanding industry, where we all know we must push a little harder to get a little more. The retail industry can take a lot out of humans, whether at executive levels or the front lines. Most of today’s wins are not something you can count on to work as effectively next week or next month. While the industry is a lot of fun it is very demanding. And it burns many out of the industry. From appliances to luxury to services, dealing with the public is never easy. Many of them show up to stores with their pleasantries or baggage. Winning is never guaranteed and you never know who’s getting cut from the team. Those who do win in retail and in their careers were in sectors during a space and time where there was demand for what they sold. Suddenly they are being recruited, if they can deliver the same magic, (most don’t) they will climb the ladder. But you’re only as good in your role as you are willing to learn new things. Those that are braver and take risks end up moving taking their skills to other sectors surprisingly doing better. Retailing teaches and prepares you for many roles this industry is not the only one where you can shine. I’ve been in retail, healthcare and food service, owned a personnel agency in the technology sector. Now I am the chairman of a utility and advise retailers and healthcare companies . Retailing is an art it’s about creativity so get creative with your skills, experiences and career. It’s not the only industry in demand for talent. An investor I met about 25 years ago taught me that I am the brand, and that my skills are highly transferable so I never let anyone tell me I can’t or don’t belong! #retailcareer #retailing #strategy #ceo #technology #innovation

HOW TO GET PROMOTED 🐔🐔🐔 Getting promoted in HARD, it won’t just fall from the sky and just doing a good job isn’t enough. There will be loads of competition from within your team and other parts of the business to secure that role. You have to get noticed, so here is how to do it: 🐔 be the person that gets sh*t done 🐔 come up with initiatives that benefit the wider team 🐔 having the right attitude is more important than having the right skills 🐔 get clear measurables from your manager about what you need to deliver 🐔 learn how to say no confidently so you don’t become overloaded with work This is the kind of stuff I wish I had been told when I was starting out. I remember being devastated when I was passed over for my first promotion. I remember I threatened to leave about 20 times, before shuffling off to the pub at clocking off time.
