I don't know who decided to hold Donate Life (organ donor awareness) month during Earth Month, but befitting my guiding principle, "When life hands you sh*t, turn it into compost, and use it to grow something beautiful," I'm sharing my son's organ donation story. It would be crass to call this the ultimate recycling experience, but sometimes awkward humor is a route through the pain. This essay is somber, though. I hope it encourages you to talk with your loved ones about organ donation and to sign onto the registry if you haven't already. Edited to note we'll be there at 7:30. So, Isaac Moldofsky's birthday is coming up. He would have been 26, wrapping up his first decade as a tech worker. He had a brilliant career from 16-21 having worked in Chicago at Dev Bootcamp, Avant, and finally, Clearcover. On at least one occasion as I dipped into Chicago's tech scene, someone asked me if I was Isaac's mom. (I kvelled!) To honor his memory and celebrate his kindness, each year near his birthday, we collect donations of high-sugar kids cereal for our local food pantry. You see, when my boys were young, we only ate healthy breakfast cereals. But on their birthdays, they could pick the junkiest cereal they wanted and eat it for the week. Help us continue Isaac's Birthday Cereal tradition. This year, we're sweetening the deal. If you join me at Soul Good Coffee (at their pop-up in Sketchbook Brewing Company, Skokie) on Friday, April 12, between 7:30* and 10 in the morning and bring a sweet donation, I'll thank you with a cuppa of your choice. We invite far-flung friends to play along with a donation to their local food pantries, neighborhood Little Free Food Pantries, and community fridges. ------ I hope you'll like or support this post because IME, this platform tends to de-prioritize posts with dates. Don't hold back on reaching out with a text as basic as "Thinking of you" or "Remembering ____'s birthday," etc. The worst thing is to feel like they didn't matter or never existed. 💔
