As shown in the chart below, new physicians are moving away from primary care and into specialty fields. At the same time, nurse practitioners certified in primary care are growing rapidly and can fill the primary care gaps left by a decline in physicians. 88% of NPs are certified in an area of primary care, and over 70% of all NPs deliver primary care.
